About Us
The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas are an international community of Roman Catholic women vowed to serve people who suffer poverty, sickness, and ignorance, with a special concern for women and children. In innovative and traditional ways they address human needs through collaborative efforts in education, healthcare, housing, and pastoral and social service.
The Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas was founded in 1991. The congregation then completed an eight year reconfiguration in which 25 former regional communities and sisters in six countries in Central and South America became six Communities with geographic names.
The Northeast Community comprises members from the former regional communities of Albany, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Portland, Providence and Vermont.
The Mid-Atlantic Community includes members from the former Brooklyn, Dallas, Merion, New Jersey and New York regional communities.
The NyPPaW (New York Pennsylvania, Pacific West) Community embraces members of the former regional communities of Buffalo, Erie, Philippines, Pittsburgh and Rochester.
The South Central Community includes members from the former Baltimore, Cincinnati, Guam, Jamaica, North Carolina and St. Louis regional communities.
The West Midwest Community is comprised of members from Auburn, Burlingame, Cedar Rapids, Chicago, Detroit, and Omaha former regional communities.
The CCASA (Caribbean, Central America South America) Community embraces members from Argentina, Belize, Chile, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Panama and Peru.
The Sisters of Mercy have served in education, healthcare and social service ministries in the United States, Latin and Central America since the mid-nineteenth century.
Today, more than 3,000 Sisters of Mercy of the Americas make a difference in the lives of others in the United States, Latin America, Jamaica, Guam and the Philippines.

We serve with more than 3,100 Mercy Associates, several Companions in Mercy, more than 960 Mercy Volunteer Corps alumni and thousands of co-workers in Mercy-sponsored programs and institutions – all sharing in the Mercy mission - and following the example of Catherine McAuley. We sponsor and operate more than 200 service organizations in collaboration with tens of thousands of committed co-ministers, staff and volunteers.
