Mercy Reconciliation Symbol

The Mercy Cross is the heart of the symbol. The theological meaning is that of Saint Theresa's prayer "Christ has no body now on earth but yours" The Cross is revealed as a ladder to eternal life. The steps underneath underpin the link between heaven and earth. They are so connected as to be a state of oneness. The figures give the symbol a flowing composition reinforced by the arrangement of the river on which the figures stand.

Bisecting the flow of the river is the Mercy Cross, linking Earth and Heaven. One hand of each figure is extended towards the next as if to strengthen and reassure them in their struggle towards reconciliation. The flow of Mercy is endless suggested by the figures diminishing in size as if vanishing out of the world. The river has a double meaning. By being connected to the cross it suggests reconciliation flowing from Christ. The Sisters of Mercy suggested by the figures standing on the river carry reconciliation out to the world. The wide range of colours in the figures suggest the universality of the Order not the local Institution of the first Sisters but an Order whose members come from as many nations.

The Mercy Reconciliation Symbol was originally designed and made by Sister Betty Larkin rsm, Hornsea. It is now produced by Saint Michael's Cottage Crafts.

St Michael's Cottage Crafts is part of Bowthorpe Community Trust. It was established to teach phically and mentally disadvantaged unemployed people how to use wood working tools and machinery productively, in a friendly and relaxed environment. It is also geared to provide work experience for school leavers and others seeking employment. Support is given by Norfolk Social Services, both through partial funding and through the referral of trainees.
