Mercy Day
2011 is a special year for all Sisters of Mercy and those affiliated with us. It marks the 180th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Mercy, and the 170th anniversary of the death of Catherine McAuley.
Mercy International Association has exciting plans for this special year, including a diversity of programmes. Among the programmes being offered, two have already generated a great deal of enthusiasm. In July 2011, MIA will be running a month-long renewal programme: ‘Watering the Roots at the Wellspring of Mercy.’ This programme will offer participants refreshment and renewal as well as opportunities for theological reflection on the mission of Mercy in our church and world. The following month in August 2011, MIA will welcome 150 Young Mercy Leaders aged 16-30 to Dublin for a pilgrimage. Some pilgrims will be continuing onto World Youth Day in Madrid while other pilgrims will engage in service-learning opportunities in Ireland. The desired outcome for the three-day pilgrimage is for pilgrims to emerge with a deeper appreciation of our Mercy tradition: past, present, and future.
Another highlight for the year will be the publication of the authorized biography of Catherine McAuley written by Mary Sullivan rsm. Mercy International Association will host a programme facilitated by Mary in September, and we hope to have a launch and book signing event during this time. There will be special programmes and celebrations to mark the 170th anniversary of the death of Catherine McAuley (11th November) and the 180th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of Mercy (12th December).
