Famine in Kenya (Congregation)

The Sisters of Mercy have ministered in Kenya for almost 50 years and are located in twelve communities in places as far apart as the Turkana desert in the North of the country to Kibwezi in the South. At present, there is a serious famine and drought situation in the country as the rains have failed.

Our sisters are working in partnership with local organizations to distribute food aid to the most vulnerable. The staffs of our hospitals are providing outreach clinics to treat malnutrition, dehydration and starvation.

One of our sisters sent the following account of a scene she witnessed.

“We witnessed cattle dying, carcasses strewn all over the place, children holding empty plates and surprisingly no fire in any homestead. In fact we were touched by one child who was almost one and a half years old, collecting beans which had fallen to the ground to eat – a sign of how much these children are suffering.”
