Join Mercy in prayer on ‘The Road to Paris’

Editor: Áine O'Connor rsm (Americas), Bridget Crisp rsm (Aotearoa New Zealand),  Marianne Comfort (Americas Institute Justice Team), Margaret Twomey rsm and Carmel Bracken rsm (The Congregation) are representing global Mercy at the UN Climate Change Conference COP 21 being held in Paris from 30 November to 11 December.
     

Mercy's particular focus will be on raising human rights and environmental concerns regarding hydraulic fracturing (fracking). Mercy will co-host two side events during the climate summit highlighting the International Movement to Ban Fracking. Co- Sponsors with Sisters of Mercy, MIA are: Center for Biological Diversity, a National U.S. group using science, law and creative media to protect the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive; Food and Water Watch, a Washington, D.C.-based non-governmental organisation and consumer rights group championing healthy food and clean water for all; 350.org, an organisation building a global climate movement and Franciscans International, a non-governmental organisation with UN General Consultative Status and a shared ministry of the global Franciscan Family.

The side events Keeping Fossil Fuels in the Ground: the International Movement to Ban Fracking, will be held on 9 December 2015.One event will take place at the official COP 21 place for side events and the other at The Climate Generations space which is the space open to the general public next to the Paris-Le Bourget site where the COP is being held.

Speakers include Bill McKibben, author, educator, environmentalist, and Co-founder of 350.org (also a co-sponsor) and Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director, Food and Water Watch

Sisters of Mercy and partners-in-Mercy are invited to pray the prayer for the earth/ Oración por nuestra Tierra from Laudato Si' for a successful outcome of this conference which commences during our preparation period for the Mercy International Reflection Process and the Year of Mercy. 

Each of the 12 Mercy Congregations and Institutes has been invited to take responsibility for their Sisters and partners-in-Mercy praying the prayer on one of the 12 days of the conference. Each one of us is, of course, welcome to pray the prayer each day.

General guidelines for use of the logo

MIA has commissioned a Mercy graphic for use by Congregations and Institutes, ministries and communities in the lead up to and during COP21. COP21 is a significant global event in this time of preparation for the Mercy International Reflection Process.

The logo is available in both Spanish and English.Use of the logo is reserved for promoting Mercy's support of and attendance at COP21 among Sisters of Mercy and partners-in-Mercy.

The logo must be reproduced in its entirety (symbol plus words) and without alteration but may be reduced in size.

The logo may be reproduced in black and white.

The logo should be reproduced with the following credit: © Mercy International Association 2015

Mercy Congregations and Institutes, communities and ministries are warmly encouraged to use the logo in communications locally.

Media, including print and digital media, may use the logo without permission, to promote or accompany their coverage of Mercy's support of COP21 among Sisters of Mercy and partners-in-Mercy.

Commercial use of the logo will require an agreement and payment of a licensing fee.
