Resources for Engaging with Laudato Si'

In preparation for the commencement of the Mercy International Reflection Process we are each encouraged to read/explore/engage with the encyclical Laudato Si' by way of readying our minds/hearts/selves for our shared undertaking.

Following are some resources to help us in engaging with the encyclical:

  • The Theologians Respond: Laudato Si . Discussion panel organised by America magazine (1:02:45)
  • Laudato Si' . This video reflection was produced by the Vatican to accompany the release of the papal encyclical. Texts appear first in Italian then in English translation. This resource provides a visual entry point for engaging with the themes of the encyclical  The reflection can be viewed here (06:18).
  • Salt and Light TV (Canada) have produced a video reflection on St Francis' 'Canticle of Creation'

  • A number of influential theologians, ethicists and philosophers offer short reflections on the encyclical and assess its moral and political significance. Read their reflections here
  • LCWR's most recent Resolution to Action (vol. 24 no.3) : 'Climate: A Common Good' has been written by Marianne Comfort, Institute Justice Team, Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Download it here (PDF)
  • The Columban Center for Advocacy and Outreach has produced Laudato Si’ Study and Action Guide to help people learn and reflect on Pope Francis’ teaching, and find direction on ways to respond. Download it here (8pps; PDF)
  • CAFOD has created a 38 slide powerpoint with quotations from the encyclical interspersed with photos from a range of locations and texts from a variety of sources including Thomas Berry, Evangelii Gaudium, Bishops Conferences and finishing with the prayer for the earth.   • EcoJesuit has produced an online 'Guidance map for Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’'with brief descriptions of specific chapters
  • 'Companion and Study Guide To The Encyclical Praise Be To You by Pope Francis'. Compiled by Professor Eamonn Conwayand Cathal Barry. It is published by the Irish Catholic ( paper) and by Trocaire, the Irish Catholic Relief Agency overseas, an organisation well placed to identify and deal with humanitarian crises.
