Christmas Greeting: Executive Director MIA

Christmas is a good time to count our blessings.

How blessed we have been in 2014. It was a year of celebration of Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy in Bermondsey celebrated the 175th year of Mercy crossing beyond the shores of Ireland. Puno Mercy in Peru and Tongatapu Mercy in Tonga celebrated the 50th anniversary of Mercy crossing the Equator in both directions: Christchurch, New Zealand going north to Tonga and Burlingame, US going south to Peru. At a global level, we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Mercy International Centre.

As we celebrate we recall the core of our mission ‘to keep alive the founding spirit of Catherine among the people most in need of God’s compassion and mercy’. We are painfully aware of the many people and places of conflict, war and bloodshed in our world today that stand in need of God’s mercy and compassion. We take hope from the words of Zechariah as he took the Christ child in his arms: ‘Out of God’s deepest Mercy, a dawn will come from on high, light for those shadowed by death, a guide for our feet on the way to peace.
