Mercy World -

In September 2010 I was a very disappointed woman. I was denied (refused) a Visa to England where I hoped to make my sabbatical. I now call it ‘a blessing in disguise’. I also hate to say I am glad that they refused me.

I came to Ireland in January 2011 for the year to do a Course in Dalgan Park, Navan. While there I knew I had a few summer months before my next Course from September to December 2011, and I wondered what I would do with 4 months . I had seen an invitation, on the internet, for volunteers at Mercy International Centre. I went for it and here is a little about my time in Catherine’s house.

I have had a most wonderful experience of Mercy world at Mercy International Centre. During my four months here I have met sisters, associates and lay partners in Mercy from near and far. I have seen them from Australia, (Brisbane, Queensland, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth), U.S.A. South America, South Africa, Philippines, England, Jamaica, Guam, Peru, New Zealand Honduras and from all around Ireland. People, young and not so young, Associates, present and past Mercy students, children of past students, present and past co- workers come from all over the world to visit the house of Catherine. The interest in this woman is amazing. The door bell has been constant with people wanting tours, some just wanting to see the Chapel and the grave. It is a wonderful experience. Some of these people are told about the Centre by their parents or friends and Sisters of Mercy. Others just see the Statue of Catherine and Lady and baby and decide to come.

I have liked meeting all the people that come around MIC. I also offered my services to do general duties in the house. For me, it has been great to be of service to women and men of Catherine who also give themselves in service to others.

Being in this house has taught me more than I could ever have imagined, about what others do in various parts of the world in the name of Catherine. One can only believe after one’s own experience. If you have not taken time to visit this your house think again. There are many things you can do here. There are programmes, retreats, conferences and you can also stay for a few days in the B & B. You will be glad.

Working, living, and experiencing life at Baggot Street has made me richer. Having heard and seen so many people in love with Catherine and the passion they have for her and her life, I have come to a very simple conclusion that, Catherine’s Spirit is as alive today as it was when she began her work of Mercy. Bravo and Congratulations! May Mercy live on through us in all the continents of the world Africa, South America, North America, Europe, Asia, Australia/Oceania.

I take this opportunity to thank all our sisters here in Ireland for opening their doors and hearts especially to me during my stay here in Ireland. ‘Asanteni sana’
