Mercy Challenge Youth Workshop

On October 22-23, 2004, a small group of youth, representing six parishes, gathered at Littledale Conference Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador for a workshop in Mercy, justice and ecology.

The workshop, sponsored by our Mercy Centre for Ecology and Justice, was facilitated by Sister Tina Geiger from the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas and Sister Dale Jarvis, our focal point person for Mercy International Justice Network in North America.

Participants learned about Sisters of Mercy involvement in Justice work internationally through our NGO at the United Nations and the Mercy International Justice Network. On the local level. our ministries to the homeless, to the sick and the dying to those in prison, our work in Peru and in ecology and justice were presented by a number of our sisters. Reflecting on these ministries Tina and Dale then guided the participants through a social analysis and a plan for the future engagement in the works of the Sisters of Mercy in Newfoundland.

At the conclusion of the workshop we were pleased with the positive response by our youth as they volunteered to become engaged in our ministries. We thank the facilitators, Tina and Dale, and our sister presenters and the member of the Ecology and Justice Committee for providing an opportunity for youth to learn and to become involved in the work of mercy, justice and ecology.
