Watch Presentations by Sisters of Mercy at Commission on the Status of Women (CSW60) Just concluded in New York

Editor: The priority theme of the 60th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW60) – the annual gathering of States to address critical issues related to gender equality and women’s rights — is 'Women’s empowerment and its link to sustainable development'.

Taking place at United Nations Headquarters in New York, from 14-24 March 2016, Member States, UN entities and accredited NGOs from around the world will take stock of progress and remaining challenges for implementing this landmark agreement for gender equality and women's rights.

The Review theme is: The elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls.

As previously advised on mercyworld.org, the Sisters of Mercy have submitted a written statement to this commission which can also be accessed on the commission’s website.

Sisters of Mercy have three areas of focus during CSW 60:

1) promoting a human rights life course approach to addressing human trafficking. Mercy will co-sponsor an event on 17 March with the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd and ACRATH on this. The title of the event is: No Random Act: Human Trafficking and the Interplay between Systemic Oppression and the Individual Life Course.

2) promoting the pastoral care of women and girls working or living on the Streets. Lynda Dearlove rsm (GB Institute) is a Speaker at this side event on 21 March which is sponsored by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the UN and women@thewell.

3) promoting the human right to water and sanitation in implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 on water and sanitation. On World Water Day (22 March) at CSW, we will co-sponsor an event as part of the NGO Mining Working Group entitled: Women, Water and Well-Being.
