Mercy Day
Eileen Savage rsm, a recently retired Montessori teacher from Canberra, came to Maliana Timor Leste for one month to introduce the Montessori method of Education to some teachers in Maliana.
L-r: Srs Eileen Savage, Helen Nolen |
Sr Eileen arrived in time to celebrate the 500 years of Portuguese language and Catholicism to the island. The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin was main celebrant at the Mass at Tasi Tolu on the Feast of the Assumption, together with thousands of Timorese for a most joyous celebration accompanied by beautiful singing and dancing.
Three weeks of concentrated work in Maliana, preparing materials and presenting activities to the teachers, who then presented to their students was all well worth the effort. The teachers were most appreciative of all that they experienced as well as the many new materials they can now use with their students.
The students responded in ways that Eileen could never envisage.
For the final two days, six teachers from Fohorem, Datorua and Taroman came to observe and participate in the Montessori classroom.
The teachers all want Eileen to return ASAP to continue formation and to visit other preschools part of the TaLiHa group of preschools. Some of these schools have already implemented aspects of the Montessori method and are keen to deepen their understanding of Montessori and to expand the activities they provide for the children.
This activity is sponsored by MercyWorks Timor Leste
