Mining Working Group at the UN Releases Important Document

Special Reports: May 20, 2014

'A Rights-Based Approach to Resource Extraction in the Pursuit of Sustainable Development: Advocacy Brief' released.

The Mining Working Group at the UN (MWG), of which MIA at the UN is an active member, released an advocacy brief. Produced at the beginning of the 11th session of the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals, the brief is entitled 'A Rights-Based Approach to Resource Extraction in the Pursuit of Sustainable Development.' It outlines the rationale for a rights-based approach to sustainable development, particularly as regards extractive industries, in accordance with the international human rights framework. The brief also presents the Rights-Based Litmus Test, a concrete tool for policy-makers and commentators to gauge the validity of proposals for sustainable development, according to States' requirements under the international human rights framework. By following four steps, the test identifies policies that: do no harm; are people-centered; contribute to the eradication of poverty; and promote a sustainable world including for future generations.

The Mercy family is encouraged to use the litmus test in your advocacy work. It will be particularly useful for your review of sustainable development, mining and water related policies and decisions at country level.

Please share this important resource with groups on the ground. The brief is currently being translated into Spanish and will be available shortly to members.
