These are the plans for this year:
We are continuing to study Divestment and expect to meet with Mercy Investment Services, Susan Makos and Brian Piney from the Institute. I am beginning to hear voices of opposition to our shareholders advocacy stance. It is difficult to believe that that policy has merit when one is talking about the most destructive industry on the planet…and when the action required is to keep these fuels in the ground to avoid the absolute worst of climate change.
In July, I plan to go on Pilgrimage to the Tar Sands in Alberta Canada. I will be going with Sister Maureen Wild, SC who has gone many times in the past. We are still looking for 2 more sisters or associates to travel and be with us. I believe that experience will open up new avenues for education opportunities, both writing and speaking, but also will open my heart to a widening embrace of the pain of Earth. I ask for prayers for this time.
We are expecting President Obama to veto the Keystone XL Pipeline. However, if there is any possibility for the northern leg of the pipeline to be built, there are four of us who have made a Pledge of Resistance. We will perform Civil Disobedience if the Pipeline gets ultimate approval. (Nancy Audette, Marlene Perrotte, Kathleen Erickson and Mary Pendergast) Sisters from Maine, Jackie Loreau, Anne Marie Borque, Kathleen Smith and Pat Pora are working to protest the reversal of a pipeline in the port of Maine intended to carry tar sands oil.
Nancy Audette and I will be offering a retreat at Mercy Farm in Benson VT this June 14-19: Passion for God, Passion for Earth, a Way Forward into the Future. Come deepen your awareness that the Universe is the primary revelation of the divine. Awaken, perhaps again, a consciousness of the sacred dimension of Earth; experience the integral community of Earth that includes every living being. Email: bsecord@mercyecology.org
We will be speaking at Mercy Secondary Ed Conference on Care of Earth: A Kaleidoscope of Connections in October. In our session we will show the connection of all our Critical Concerns through the lens of Earth.
The governor of New York has banned fracking in New York! Many sisters and associates were involved in protests and letter writing to support the ban.
