Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Providence Row Celebrates the Ongoing Commitment of the Sisters of Mercy to the Homeless and Vulnerable of London (Great Britain)
Providence Row in east London held a celebration of the Sisters of Mercy event on Tuesday, 10 December, to commemorate their work and huge contribution to the charity. The Sisters founded Providence Row in 1860 with Father Daniel Gilbert and they continued to run it until 1988.
The Archbishop of Westminster, Most Rev Vincent Nichols, led a service which gave thanks to the work of the Sisters and Providence Row. During the service he reflected on the charity’s approach to seeing those who use the centre as people with problems, not problem people. “When we fail to see people as people and see them as statistics then we will fail to support them”. The Archbishop of Westminster looked back on the charity’s history and how it was always open to all, regardless of faith: “From the word go this was a charity which was open to everybody, a characteristic of a good charity.”...
The Sisters remain linked to Providence Row; two members of the Board are from the Sisters of Mercy of the Unionwww.sistersofmercyunion.org.uk and the Institute of Our Lady of Mercy...

Mercy International Association Intention for the Coming Week (MIA)
'You have called us to fullness of life, O God. Set us free, then, from al that prevents us from reaching our full stature as children of grace. Freedom is the law you have written in our hearts, and so we know that you will hear and answer our prayer. Amen.'

Apartheid Days Remembered (The Congregation)
“Make every home, every shack or rickety structure a centre of learning.” (Nelson Mandela)
Throughout his life, Mandela stressed the need for education as a means of liberating the oppressed and enabling them to live in dignity. Even when he was imprisoned on Robben Island, he encouraged others (his white jailers as well as his co-prisoners) to keep on striving for an education. Above all he led by example – managing against all odds to qualify as a lawyer.
The South African apartheid regime used education as a means of oppression: firstly by providing education of an inferior nature, secondly by limiting access to any kind of education and thirdly by not making attendance at school compulsory for black Africans as it was for whites. (Mandela had been educated at a Methodist mission school before apartheid became a law).
How did the Church, and in particular, the Mercy Sisters contribute to Mandela’s ambition of universal education for every South African?...

Editor: Sr Anna Burke's reflection at the Foundation Day Eucharist (pages 9-14 of the Mass booklet) draws the connections between Mercy as understood by Sisters of Mercy and Nelson Mandela. It is another lens, another source of inspiration on the topic addressed by Sr Immaculata.

Championing the Dignity of Indigenous Peoples (Americas)
Editor: Last week we published the news that the Americas Mercy Institute Leadership Team, along with 12 other religious congregations, has called upon Pope Francis to start a new era of justice with a public declaration that formally rescinds papal “bulls,” or decrees, of the 1490s that dehumanize indigenous peoples and justify the taking of indigenous land.
We have learned this week that religious non-governmental organizations in the United Nations, including the Partnership for Global Justice, have written to Pope Francis to ask him to 'act with courage and holy resolve to formally revoke the Papal Bulls', calling such an action 'an act of moral leadership' to governments and the churches.
