Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Watch ‘Fan Into a Flame – The Young Mercy Leaders' Pilgrimage’(MIA)
‘Fan Into a Flame’ was filmed during the Young Mercy Leaders Pilgrimage, held in Baggot Street in August 2013. During the Pilgrimage over 100 young people from Mayo to Belize and Melbourne to New Jersey, gathered in Dublin to undertake a journey of self-discovery and of leadership, inspired by Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. Through presentations, discussions, reflection and prayer, students engaged the history and charism of Mercy, and returned to their ordinary lives better equipped to be Mercy leaders in our schools and in our world.
The video is linked to this item (32:06).

'Where Have All The Good Nuns Gone?' (GB Institute)
Lynda Dearlove rsm, founder of the Charity “Women at the Well” in London, Kings Cross which provides a service for women locked into a pavement culture, and its surrounding issues of prostitution, drugs, alcoholism, violence and homelessness, was recently invited to speak on the BBC's Women's Hour. The topic Why are nuns fair game for drama and comedy? was in part in response to the film 'Philomena' based on a true story about an elderly Irish woman searching for the toddler son she gave up for adoption as an unwed teen, living in a home for pregnant women, run by Catholic Sisters in Ireland in the 1950s. Some of the Sisters and the Home's systems are portrayed in an unfavourable light and film makers admit to using dramatic licence in some scenes and events.

Global Action Lived Locally: A Case Study from Guyana (Americas)
GUYANA, situated between Venezuela and Suriname in the north of South America, and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, is a source country for men, women, and children trafficked for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation and forced labor. Many trafficking victims along the coast are Amerindian teenagers, targeted by traffickers because of poor education and job prospects in their home regions. Guyana Human Rights Association reported that girls as young as 11 years are recruited to work in bars and restaurants as prostitutes. Children are also engaged in prostitution in ports, gold mining areas, and the capital city of Georgetown. Other countries’ trafficking reports point to the trafficking of Guyanese women and girls for sexual exploitation to neighbouring countries. For many years the local Government denied that there was a problem and discounted international reports.
In the following report, Mary Judith Schmelz rsm, from Georgetown, recounts how her local community got interested in Anti-trafficking Action.

Irish Hotels Federation offers full support to the MECPATH Campaign (The Congregation)
On Wednesday 20th November Srs. Mary Ryan RSM and Denise Boyle fmdm, met with the Executive Council of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) at the Ardilaun Hotel in Galway. We gave a presentation on our Campaign (Mercy-End child Prostitution and Trafficking in the Hospitality Sector) and then had a good discussion, during which we clarified some important issues about the ECPAT (End Child Prostitution, Pornography and Trafficking) Code of Conduct, which we are inviting the IHF members to sign. The hotels which sign the Code, are publicly stating their commitment to safeguarding children on their premises, especially from any form of sexual exploitation...

Update: Issue of Fracking in Newfoundland and Labrador (Newfoundland)
...The assistance given through the MIA Fracking Group and MGC to the unrelenting work of the different Newfoundland Fracking Awareness Groups and Networks has raised awareness of the influence of the work of justice by the Sisters of Mercy. We have received comments to the effect that many were not aware that Sisters of Mercy are so well connected as an international group with an NGO at the UN and that we are so deeply interested and involved in issues such as this. These local groups were extremely pleased and inspired to learn that the fracking issue in Newfoundland was being presented at the United Nations...

Caring for the Nation (repeated)
Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1861, the Mater was the first hospital to open its doors 24 hours a day, at the time, the only refuge open to those affected by the smallpox and cholera epidemics that raged through the overcrowded tenements. It was the first hospital to care for outpatients, and was at the scene of many of the most dramatic and traumatic incidents to grip the city, such as the attempted rescue of Sean MacStiofain from the hospital while on hunger strike, the Dublin bombings of 1972/73, and the Stardust tragedy in 1981.

Brené Brown
Brené Brown, research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, has spent the past twelve years studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame. We 'introduced' her to Mercy E-news readers in Issue 510 (17 April 2013) speaking on 'The Power of Vulnerability'. In this video of her recent presentation,'Why your critics aren't the ones who count', at the 99U conference, Brené shows us how to deal with the critics and our own self-doubt by refusing to “armor up” and shut ourselves off. View the presentation here (22:40)
David Steindl-Rast OSB
We all want to be happy. It is gratefulness that makes us happy says Benedictine Brother David Steindl-Rast, a monk and interfaith scholar. His recently posted talk on TED has been described as 'An inspiring lesson in slowing down, looking where you’re going, and above all, being grateful.' You decide. View it here (14:30) A reading and viewing list on the theme has also been compiled. See it here.
