Mercy Steps Up Honduras Advocacy (Americas)
Mercy has continued to monitor the human rights situation in Honduras, particularly the violence directed against rural communities exercising their right to peacefully oppose mining and against human rights defenders and international accompaniers who have been documenting the violations.
This comes in the larger context of the military takeover of police functions, initially with 1,000 on the streets in early October and up to 5,000 prior to the country’s elections on November 24. Responding to the call for election monitors, Mercy Sister Kathleen Erickson, a West-Midwest justice coordinator, will be joining a delegation of volunteers organized by SHARE.

Mercy Teams Up with Philips to Launch Telehealth Services (Americas)
Mercy, one of the earliest providers of telehealth for critical care in the U.S., and Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) today announced that they will collaborate to expand Mercy's telehealth services to include medical and surgical hospital units. Telehealth enables clinicians to remotely monitor and manage patients in any location and is one of the fastest growing care delivery models. Mercy is currently managing 430 intensive care unit beds with the Philips eICU program and multiple Emergency Departments with the Philips Telestroke Program, and will soon extend these services to medical and surgical hospital units.
As patient acuity in hospitals continues to increase, care of patients on medical and surgical units represents an area of substantial unmet need and consumption of health care resources. By 2017, Mercy is planning to provide the Philips eAcute program to 1,500 acute care beds not only within the Mercy system, but across the U.S...

Vale Sister Joannes Clifford (Americas)
Editor: Her Obituary in the Baltimore Sun begins as it is to be expected - quite formally. Reading the article, however, reveals the woman whose heart stretched to enfold the widowed, separated and divorced. She was buried from the Mercy High School auditorium (her request), the school she gave 53 years of her life to, on 10 November ,with between 500 - 600 perons attending to celebrate her life.
It's a heartfelt and heartwarming tribute on a life well-lived...

Sister Charlotte McGrath Celebrates Centennial (Americas)
With quiet determination Sister Charlotte McGrath holds onto her independence as she enters into everyday life with two dozen of our sisters in a moderate assisted living community in the Mercy Convent in Whitestone, New York. Despite her blindness, she cares for herself and wends her way from her second floor bedroom to the chapel, dining room and other shared areas on the first floor. Her sisters, who cannot help loving her, bring her meals to the table and update her about messages she cannot read...
