Mercy International Association Intention for the Coming Week (MIA)
More than a million people in India made homeless by Cyclone Phailin;100,000 people killed, over two million refugees fled to neighbouring countries and at least another five million people displaced inside Syria; more than 700,000 people affected by catastropic flooding in Cambodia; 10.3 million people across west Africa suffering from food shortages; ongoing insecurity affecting South Sudan and Somalia; a severe storm that ripped across Britain and onto mainland Europe with a death toll of 13, with the UK and Germany hit the hardest; floods in the Philippines, the third most vulnerable country in the world to natural disasters and climate change...
There are so many in our world who are in need of prayer and practical help. Let us not succumb to a culture of 'global indifference' (Pope Francis).

Being Visible and Available (ISMAPNG)
Sixteen years ago, Monsignor Allan Hart had a new vision of being pastoral in the Parish of Hamilton, part of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, New South Wales. He approached the Sisters of Mercy to develop this new approach which was to be an outreach to all people (not only Catholics) in the entire region of his Parish. This was to be accomplished by simply walking in the residential streets and casually meeting the people in their gardens or along the street. Patricia Whitten rsm was appointed coordinator to gather a small group of Sisters for this ministry and so began the Walking Pastoral Team...

Brief Report on the MECPATH Training Workshop (The Congregation)
Mercy-End Child Prostitution and Trafficking in the Hospitality Sector’ (MECPATH) is a ministry of The Congregation. On Friday, 4 October MECPATH held a training workshop to raise awareness and brief the 12 Mercy Sister Volunteers from the 4 Irish Provinces about the sexual exploitation of Children in Ireland today.
Mary Ryan rsm (Campaign Coordinator) and Denise Boyle fmdm (Campaign Manager) invited speakers from NGOs; plus the Anti-human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the Ministry of Justice; and the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) which includes the anti-human trafficking section, to address the participants.. The NGO participants came from Act to Prevent Trafficking (APT); Children’s Rights Alliance (CRA); and Survivors of Prostitution and Abuse Calling for Enlightenment (SPACE).

National Mercy Young Adult Gathering (Parramatta & North Sydney Congregations)
On Saturday, 19 October, 20 young adults from the Sydney MAGnet (Mercy Action Group Network) and the Brisbane BAM (Brisbane Actioning Mercy) groups gathered at Stormanson House, North Sydney. On 18 October, Agbinkhianmeghe E. Orobator SJ, Provincial of the Eastern Africa Jesuit Province, gave the 2013 CAFOD Pope Paul VI lecture at Kings College London. His talk was entitled '"A billion reasons to believe in Africa: The long march from ‘the hopeless continent’ to ‘the spiritual lung of humanity'".Orobator concluded his talk by saying that 'In spite of harmful stigmatization and stereotypical portrayal, Africa has defied formidable odds and demonstrated resilience and resolve borne on the courage and hope of a billion people.
