Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Wonderful Mercy Day Celebrations at Baggot Street and Elsewhere (MIA)
Editor: More than 150 Sisters of Mercy, Associates, friends and partners in ministry came together on Tuesday, 24 September to commemorate Mercy Day 2013 in Baggot Street. Somehow, as the image (right) shows, all those who could be at Mercy International Centre managed to fit in to the chapel!
With almost every 'corner' of the Mercy world represented, the day had a truly international flavour, as demonstrated in the listing in the Mass booklet of the home countries of those who took on special responsibilities in the Eucharistic celebration. The celebrant, Bishop Peter Connors, Emeritas Bishop of Ballarat, was from Australia. Mary C. Sullivan rsm (Americas), invited to break open the meaning and call of the day's readings, reminded all present in her powerful reflection that 'the invitation at the heart of the divine inspiration that is Mercy Day.. is to have the courage and trust to continually say Yes - again and again - as our lives unfold'.
It was a joyous day as the report linked to this item shows and, yes, oh yes, the sun did shine!
In other parts of the Mercy world the celebrations were equally as enjoyable and memorable.

'Come and See Catherine’s Dublin, Yesterday and Today' (MIA)
'Come and see' is a familiar invitation across all of our countries and languages. Mary Waskowiak rsm presently serves as the first MIA Director of Development-Fundraising. Prompted by the interest of a special major donor, Sister Mary created the opportunity for potential donors and new/potential staff to 'Come and see Catherine’s Dublin, yesterday and today'.
Led by the gifted expertise of Sisters Mary Reynolds, Mary Sullivan, Àine Barrins, Mary Kay Dobrovolny and Associate Anne Reid, the U.S.-based tour group experienced Catherine’s first house at Baggot Street, as well as her home with William and Catherine Callaghan at Coolock House. Between both locations, they had a “mini-bus tour” of Dublin, looking at where Catherine had been born and where she lived prior to moving in to assist the Callaghan couple...

First Launch of the Revised and Recently Approved Constitutions and Directory (ISMAPNG)
A large number of Sisters gathered in Sydney on Saturday, 7 September for the first Launch of the revised and recently approved Constitutions and Directory of the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea (ISMAPNG)...
The Sisters who gathered for the Launch came from one of four Australian States or from Papua New Guinea, thus making tangible the Institute’s new identity as an international group of Sisters of Mercy. Given this geographic spread of Sisters, it was an occasion for some to meet some others for the first time. In the coming months, as launches take place in ten different places throughout both Papua New Guinea and Australia, many other Sisters will also have the opportunity to meet and experience our growing identity as a new Institute...

Patricia Powell rsm is a founding member and former Director of Rahamim Ecological Learning Community.
Patricia writes: 'Theologian and philosopher, Bernard Lonergan defines community as “not just a number of people [sic] within a geographical frontier. It is an achievement of common meaning.” He identifies as “markers” for community: common experience, common understanding, common judgements, common decisions and commitments. (Method in Theology p79)
Like so much in our reality, community here refers to communities of the human species – communities formed by beings with self-reflective consciousness. It is that same capacity to reflect consciously on our reality, which has now enabled us to experience the insight that we are part of a planetary community: the community of all being. The markers for this community are somewhat different from the markers Lonergan identifies for human community...'

Caring for the Nation: A History of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (New resource)
Caring for the Nation tells the story of Ireland's best known and perhaps its most highly regarded hospital, Dublin's Mater Hospital. For 150 years, the Mater has been at the centre of city life, from its beginnings helping the poor of Dublin during the 1800s, when only the wealthy could afford to gain access to medical care, through the dark years of the Civil War and the Emergency, through the rapid medical developments that took place during and after World War II...
Written by Eugene Nolan rsm, the hospital archivist, who nursed there for many years, Caring for the Nation is the definitive history of this Dublin institution, and a fascinating insight into the history and health of the city itself.

- 'Five Ways to Develop “Ecoliteracy”'
In this article the authors explain to educators how to teach young people to care deeply about the environment using five practices developed by the Center for Ecoliteracy that 'plant the seeds for a positive relationship with the natural world that can sustain a young person's interest and involvement for a lifetime'. These 5 practices could be adopted by people of all ages:
1. Develop empathy for all forms of life
2. Embrace sustainability as a community practice
3. Make the invisible visible
4. Anticipate unintended consequences
5. Understand how nature sustains life

- 'Alberta Voices'. Stories of fracking in Alberta, Canada
Alberta Voices is a series of stories giving voice to those whose troubling experiences with hydraulic fracturing and associated activities may not have not been considered in Alberta’s discussion of oil and gas development.
The first story in text and film was uploaded on 24 September. Howard and Nielle Hawkwood are farmer / ranchers from Lochend, Alberta. They live on their Family Farm of 40 years. Surrounded by 70 unconventional wells, they have noticed changes in their land, livestock, and health since 2009... A case study of the human experience. View the video clip here (14:48)
Spirituality
- Salt and Light media have just posted online the story behind the St John's Bible, the first hand written, hand illuminated Bible of its kind in 500 years. The Bible was commissioned in 1998 by the monks of Saint John's Abbey in Minnesota, US. Its creation took almost 11 years. The result? In the words of one of the interviewees, 'The illuminations give people another way of beginning to understand Scripture. They are meant to ignite the pastoral imagination. So people...are able to go deeply into the art, are able to imagine in a new way God's dream for them...' View the video clip here (07:40) Find out more at saintjohnsbible.org
- The article 'Thank you Monks' by Mary Valle in the latest issue of America online provides an apposite companion piece to the St John's Bible clip. Don't miss the invitation at the bottom of Valle's article to 'browse some works from the exhibit' at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore which will enable you to 'go deeply into the art...'.
- 'We must do the works of mercy, but with mercy. With my heart there'.

Worth a Listen:
Yesterday was the International Day of Older Persons. The theme this year is The future we want: what older persons are saying. In a new book 'In Praise of Aging', released in Australia last week, the author, Patricia Edgar – sociologist, educator, writer, producer and policy analyst – challenges preconceptions about ageing, arguing that 50 is now the start of the second half of life … not the beginning of the end. Listen to an interview with Ms Edgar here (19:25) To have a look inside the text, or to purchase, visit Amazon Watch a short promotional clip here (1:06)
