Mercy International Association Intention for the Coming Week (MIA)
Mercy International Association joins with the Institute Leadership Team of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in calling on President Obama and Congress to 'step back' from plans to launch a military attack in Syria.
The Institute of the Americas Statement on Syria: 'Crisis in Syria Calls for Prayer and Peaceful Action' is online. Read it here
Affecting images of some of the millions of Syrian refugees can be seen in the special presentation 'Six Million Displaced by War in Syria', published yesterday in The Atlantic online. In the words from our prayer last week, 'they are not numbers, but names, members of a family. They are mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. They are our brothers and sisters, children of God who created them in His image and likeness...' Meet them here.
Four million Syrians are internally displaced, two million have fled the country. One million of those are children.
An international petition for peace is gathering global support. When the petition reaches one million signers it will be delivered directly to the two presidents, Asaad (Syria) and Obama (US).Sign the international petition for peace here
A World at School has developed a plan to provide Education without Borders so that the Syrian refugee children in Lebanon can go to school within a few weeks. They will deliver a petition to world leaders on 23 September asking them to fund education for Syrian refugees. Sign the petition here
Let us continue to pray for the victims of this war. For all of them, and each one of them, enduring what the World Health Organization now calls 'the worst ongoing humanitarian crisis on earth'.

Soroptimist, McAuley Center Have Recipe for Empowerment (Americas)
When Karen Vlasek walked into the kitchen of the Catherine McAuley Center’s Transitional Housing Program, she took one look at the cramped space, dated cabinetry and dilapidated appliances, turned to Jennifer Tibbetts, transitional housing program manager, and said: “What if we can do something for you?”
That was the beginning of a partnership between Vlasek’s organization, Soroptimist of Cedar Rapids/Marion, and the Catherine McAuley Center. Their goal is to transform the outdated kitchen into an accessible, functional space where homeless women can learn the skills needed to transition to a permanent living situation...

Mercy Springfield in Clinical Trial for Dissolvable Heart Device (Americas)
Mercy Hospital Springfield is evaluating an innovative device to fight coronary artery disease, which is characterized by blockages of fat and cholesterol in the vessels that supply blood to the heart. Doctors have been treating those blockages in the heart for decades with things like balloon angioplasty and metallic and drug eluting stents, which push the blockages out of the way and restore blood flow.
The latest innovation is a temporary device that eventually dissolves into the body...

Catherine's Cause for Canonisation: An Update (The Congregation)
Editor: 'Even though we do not as yet have a miracle that is acceptable to the Congregation for Causes', writes Brenda Dolphin rsm, Postulator for the Cause of Catherine McAuley, in an article newly published on The Congregation's website, 'there is plenty happening around the world that underlines the extent of Catherine’s “fame for holiness”, which is one of the most important criteria for canonisation...
The miracle today, I think, is the fascination that Catherine McAuley and the charism of Mercy continue to hold for the thousands of Mercy co-workers, collaborators and associates who flock to visit her tomb and who thirst for closer contact with and understanding of this intrepid and holy woman and her way to God...'
