Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Jamaican Mercy Associates Celebrate 25 Years of Mercy Connection (MIA)
As part of their 25th Anniversary celebrations, six Jamaican Mercy Associates visited Mercy International Centre recently to take part in the Come Home to Catherine Programme...
Taking part in the programme was a very important experience for the Jamaican Associates...“The original house physically connects us with the Sisters of Mercy on whose shoulders we stand, and bears testimony to Catherine’s vision to hear the cries of the poor...”

Care of Creation (Brisbane Congregation)
The 2008 Chapter of the Brisbane Congregation accepted Stewardship for Creation as a priority area for action during the next five years. It recommended a spirituality that recognizes the goodness of God’s creation and compels us to respond to the consequences of environmental damage for the Earth and all life.
We acknowledged that climate change is a reality of our world and a human rights issue of our times, impacting most seriously on the poorest people of our planet.
We pledged to respond through:
- Awareness raising and education
- Advocacy on behalf of those suffering as a result of environmental harm
- Personal and communal action.
This newsletter is a report on what has resulted communally so far.

Playing a Vital Role in the City of Detroit (Americas)
Editor: Much has been written recently about the City of Detroit’s filing for bankruptcy in mid-July. 'As a Catholic, Jesuit and Mercy university with three campuses in Detroit, this is another ideal time in our history to show and share [University of Detroit Mercy] UDM’s commitment and economic impact on an iconic American city.' says Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D., President University of Detroit Mercy.
Once such project is that between General Motors Co. executives, Detroit-area high school students and University of Detroit Mercy administrators. A nine week internship for 110 Detroit area students finishes tomorrow, 22 August. Over those nine weeks students have 'refurbished eight Detroit-area parks, planted 425 trees, shrubs and flowers, laid 392 yards of mulch, applied 223 gallons of paint, disposed of 205 bags and 29 Dumpsters of plant overgrowth and refuse, distributed 30,000 pounds of food via local hunger organizations...'

Toowoomba Diocese Social Justice Commission and the Tara Gasfield (ISMAPNG)
Deirdre Gardiner is a Sister of Mercy who works at the Toowoomba Social Justice Commission, Queensland. Tara is a community situated two and a half hours drive west of Toowoomba. The Executive Officer of the Commission became aware of the concerns of residents of what is known as the Residential Estates, an area north of Tara who are living surrounded by gas wells, and the Kenya processing plant. The residents of this area are people who have bought property here at low prices to find a place away from city life. For some, it would be a great place to raise their children in a good country environment. There is no connection to the town water or electricity. They rely on bores, rain tanks or dams for water and generate their own electricity. This was before the search for coal seam gas. Now, this area is known as a gasfield...
