Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

'An experience of fidelity...that is our story': an Interview with Pat McDermott rsm (Americas)
Editor: On 1 August, the National Catholic Reporter (NCR) conducted an interview with Pat McDermott rsm, President of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas.
The interview comes as the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), which represents about 80 percent of the 57,000 U.S. Sisters, is preparing for its annual assembly, to be held this year from 13-16 August in Orlando, Florida. About 900 women religious are expected to attend the conference with the theme:' Leadership Evolving: Graced, Grounded & Free'. This important assembly will explore how the growing awareness of an evolving universe impacts understandings of religious life and leadership, with the keynote address being given by Ilia Delio OSF.
In her interview Sr Pat expressed faith in the journey of religious and hope for dialogue and finding 'a middle way' for LCWR and the Vatican, recognising that resolution of the matter is unlikely at this forthcoming assembly. ' I think we can continue to give direction to the leaders that the principles that we want -- honest and open dialogue, mutual accountability, faithfulness to our mission -- we want those upheld. So how can you do that and bring the doctrinal assessment to a close?...'
'...In the end..,' said Sr Pat, 'it’s not so much about whether doctrine will change -- and perhaps it will. But it’s about attitudes.
It’s about: Can we have conversations with one another that are rich and stretching about what’s happening in our world? In the end, that’s what religious life is about. It’s attending to the needs of our world....'

Advocacy for Justice at the United Nations (MGA)
In this last in the series of reflections on the 2013 Mercy Global Action (MGA) Advocacy Experience at the UN, the focus is on the participants’ learnings for their ministry.
Advocacy for justice at the United Nations is advocacy in the spirit – the Spirit of God and the spirit of Mercy.
No one knows this better than those who continue to labor in the arena of advocacy to bring forth the voice of the voiceless, the cry of those who have been silenced by poverty, insecurity, marginalization, and exclusion...

Keeping Watch With Those Seeking Sanctuary: An Invitation to Prayer (Australia)
Editor: In last week's Mercy E-news (Issue 525) the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea (ISMAPNG) called for an end to the "inhumane treatment of asylum seekers", rejecting the Australian government’s decision to transport new arrivals to Papua New Guinea.
Tomorrow, 8 August, Feast Day of St Mary MacKillop, the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart invite all Australians and people of good will to join us in prayer as a sign of your solidarity with asylum seekers. Mary’s feast is an opportunity for all of us to engage in a communal prayer that will enable us to stand with those who have been pushed to the edges and excluded from our land, Australia.
Details of the prayer vigil, including a prayer you may wish to use, are linked to this item.

'We all have Catherine in Common': a Reflection on the YML Experience (ISMAPNG)
Editor: In Issue 516 (May 29) we linked to a report in the Warrnambool, Victoria, paper, The Standard. The paper carried an interview with Eliza Sully, 15, and Aylish Frusher, 16, students from Emmanuel College in Warrnambool, participants in the Young Mercy Leaders Pilgrimage, supported to do so by Emmanuel College and their local parishes of St Joseph’s and Our Lady Help of Christians.
Last Sunday Eliza gave her report to her parish. That account gives witness to the impact this experience of global Mercy had on Eliza. Read Eliza's report here.

No event of particular significance is recorded in the "Mercy Through the Years Calendar" as having taken place on 7 August. We know, however, that the Works of Mercy continued to be carried out and so we remember on this day Catherine and all our Sisters, Associates and Co-workers who have given their lives in service to others.
We invite contributions for this date to be be added to the mercyworld.org online calendar.
