Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

ISMAPNG Responds to Australian Government's Decision to House Asylum Seekers in PNG (ISMAPNG)
Editor: The Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea (ISMAPNG) has called for an end to the "inhumane treatment of asylum seekers", rejecting the Australian government’s decision to transport new arrivals to PNG.
"Our Sisters continue to vehemently condemn such actions which increase the suffering and anguish of asylum seekers and, simultaneously, diminish our common humanity. Together with all people of goodwill we seek an end to the inhumane treatment of asylum seekers," said Berneice Loch rsm, Congregational Leader.
Statements have been released on behalf of the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea (ISMAPNG) and of Sisters of Mercy living in Papua New Guinea, regarding the Agreement between the governments of Australia and Papua New Guinea to take asylum seekers.
In the second statement 'Insights from Sisters of Mercy in PNG on Asylum Seekers sent to PNG', Theresia Tina rsm and Maryanne Kolkia rsm, both Papua New Guineans, expressed their shame and embarassment at such a decision "when the majority of our own people have minimal to non-existing access to basic infrastructures, health care, education, law and order and employment opportunities..."
Sisters Theresia and Maryanne proceed to outline the conditions for the people of PNG before concluding: "The PNG Government has not provided better basic services for its 7.1million people over the last 38 years even with all the money received from Australian Aid. PNG has a poor result of the basic development indicators for the Millennium Development Goals. How can PNG manage more people within its means and still provide the best for those who most need help? How can the government fulfil its vision 2050 goal and mission?"

Catherine McAuley and our Holy Patrons (Institute Great Britain)
Editor: Reflecting on the challenges that faced Catherine McAuley - ongoing disputes, clerical opposition, making foundations, poor health...Camilla Hunt rsm says we have to ask 'How did she do it?'
Camilla proposes that Catherine drew on the wisdom of our Catholic tradition and enlisted an ‘Army of Patrons’ to support her and the Congregation.
Camilla continues: 'It occurred to me that some of us may not be familiar with the Saints that Catherine enlisted as the Patrons of our Congregation and that it might be helpful to remind ourselves of each as their feastday is celebrated so I resolved to do this and will begin with St Camillus de Lellis whose feastday was on the 14th July...'

Summer Program at Center for Ecology and Justice (Newfoundland)
If you cut across the diameter of an apple you will see a five- pointed star at its centre. Many of the blossoms that turn into the vegetables and fruits that we eat are also shaped like five pointed stars. To the Mercy Centre for Ecology & Justice, the five pointed star is a symbol that we are all connected in a reciprocal relationship with nature and the universe. The Mercy Centre for Ecology & Justice’s mission is to promote the interconnectedness and interrelatedness of all creation and to live in a spirituality flowing out of the sacredness of all creation...

The ACRATH Education Resource is now on-line (Australia)
An educational resource has been prepared by the ACRATH ( Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans) Education Committee to assist secondary school (second level) teachers in raising their students' consciousness and educating them about the issue of human trafficking.
Developed as a 4-step process for teaching about human trafficking: Introduction – Information – Recognition – Action, each step in the process is crucial and requires completion as students move through the learning cycle to a deepened understanding of the issue of modern day slavery and a commitment to taking action.
This resource is available online without charge and is linked to this item.
