ISMAPNG Responds to Australian Government's Decision to House Asylum Seekers in PNG (ISMAPNG)

Editor: The Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea (ISMAPNG) has called for an end to the "inhumane treatment of asylum seekers", rejecting the Australian government’s decision to transport new arrivals to PNG.

"Our Sisters continue to vehemently condemn such actions which increase the suffering and anguish of asylum seekers and, simultaneously, diminish our common humanity. Together with all people of goodwill we seek an end to the inhumane treatment of asylum seekers," said Berneice Loch rsm, Congregational Leader.

Statements have been released on behalf of the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea (ISMAPNG) and of Sisters of Mercy living in Papua New Guinea,  regarding the Agreement between the governments of Australia and Papua New Guinea to take asylum seekers.

In the second statement 'Insights from Sisters of Mercy in PNG on Asylum Seekers sent to PNG', Theresia Tina rsm and Maryanne Kolkia rsm, both Papua New Guineans, expressed their shame and embarassment at such a decision "when the majority of our own people have minimal to non-existing access to basic infrastructures, health care, education, law and order and employment opportunities..."

Sisters Theresia and Maryanne proceed to outline the conditions for the people of PNG before concluding: "The PNG Government has not provided better basic services for its 7.1million people over the last 38 years even with all the money received from Australian Aid. PNG has a poor result of the basic development indicators for the Millennium Development Goals. How can PNG manage more people within its means and still provide the best for those who most need help? How can the government fulfil its vision 2050 goal and mission?"

The Guardian Activate Summit held on 9 July was a one-day summit for leaders across all sectors to explore how the web and associated technologies are reshaping our world.  Among the kenote speakers was Helen Clark, administrator, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and former prime minister, New Zealand, who explained how the UNDP is using technology to involve people in shaping the next global development agenda. So far, more than 700,000 people have participated in the online exercise (promoted in Mercy e-news) to help shape the post-millennium development goals. Watch the video here (21:34)
