Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

An Experience of Living in Venerable Catherine's Last Foundation (GB Union)
Editor: St Mary's Handsworth was the second English foundation of the order and as the last house founded by Catherine McAuley the decision was taken that it should continue as a Spirituality and Associates Centre, offer a Heritage Trail and extend a ministry to local women and children. There are currently six sisters in the Community, carrying out various ministries. What does it mean to walk in the foosteps of the Foundress? During June the Handsworth Mercy community hosted a number of Mercy visitors on pilgrimage. One of the pilgrims shares her reflections...
"The three weeks I spent in St. Mary’s, Handsworth during the month of June have made a lasting impression on me.
Firstly, there was the experience of walking the same corridors that Catherine walked, passing through doors she walked through, touching furniture she touched, and hearing the chimes of the clock she heard. She wrote in one of her letters from St. Mary’s that losing track of time there was impossible because ‘the clock chymes (sic.) the quarter’.
I was also moved by the memory of the hundreds of sisters who have lived, prayed, worked and died in St. Mary’s..."

No event of particular significance is recorded in the "Mercy Through the Years Calendar" as having taken place on 17 July. We know, however, that the Works of Mercy continued to be carried out and so we remember on this day Catherine and all our Sisters, Associates and Co-workers who have given their lives in service to others.
We invite contributions for this date to be be added to the mercyworld.org online calendar.
