Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Reflecting on the Experience of Participating in the Wellspring Programme (MIA)
Editor: Over the past month we have seen and heard from the four presenters at the Watering the Roots at the Wellspring of Mercy month long renewal programme. Each week in Mercy E-news we have been able to experience through the powerful medium of video, the insights about contemporary Religious Life, Scripture, Catherine McAuley and Spirituality that Marie Chin rsm, Veronica Lawson rsm, Madeline Duckett rsm and Janet Ruffing rsm shared with the participants.
The 43 videos created by Adele Howard rsm in Dublin from the series input, as well as related print materials from the presenters, can all be accessed in the newly created 'Wellspring programme' category in the Spirituality section of the mercyworld.org website, for use individually or with a group. A listing of all the videos, in order, with timings given to help plan your viewing, can be downloaded here.
In this week's issue the Wellspring participants share their reflections with us. Their reflections can be accessed by clicking the 'More' button below.
Sisters from across the Mercy world have been enthusiastically accessing these resources over the past four weeks. We hear from Pat Linnane rsm (ISMAPNG) who shares her reflections as one who has participated at home.
We continue to welcome your input on how you have used, or plan to use, the Wellspring 2013 video series. Send your reflections/responses to: the Editor

‘Malala Day’ Aims to Boost Access to Education Worldwide (MIA)
Editor: Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani champion for universal education and girls’ rights, will make her first high level public appearance at the United Nations on 12 July. At the heart of “Malala Day” is a call to improve the lives of some 57 million out of school children by improving education access by 2015. The Day also celebrates Malala’s 16th birthday.
' “On 12 July, Malala will be joined by hundreds of students from more than 80 countries in a unique Youth Assembly, where diplomats will take a back seat as young people take over the UN,” Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-moon said in an op-ed for the Huffington Post. “They will gather to issue a global call for quality education for all...
“We must do all we can to ensure that schools are safe and secure learning spaces. Nowhere in the world should it be an act of bravery for an adult to teach or a girl to go to school...” '
Join the call to support the Global Education First Initiative by posting photos, Vine & Instagram videos using the hashtag #MalalaDay and sign-up online to say you stand with Malala.

Being in Mission Today - Embracing Diversity (Aotearoa New Zealand)
'Diversity can be seen as an obstacle or an opportunity, depending on whether our preference is for order or variety. Creator God seems certainly to favour the second, in making a world that is richly diverse, a creation that unfolds and continues to grow increasingly complex as it does so. The call to understand and care for creation is, more than anything, an invitation to see how we and all other forms of life are interdependent...'

In the Flow of the Mobius Strip (The Congregation)
'Some months ago,' writes Carmel Bracken rsm, 'browsing in a charity shop in Enniskillen I came upon the Mobius Strip pictured here. One week earlier I would have passed it by because I would not have known its significance. Synchronistic ally, I had just read about the symbol in a book called A Hidden Wholeness by Parker Palmer. Thus I bought the object, placed it in my prayer space so I could reflect on its challenges...'
In a fascinating article Sr Carmel shares with us her reflections on the Mobius strip which 'symbolizes transformation on a planetary level'.

Working to Make Homelessness History (Americas)
Editor: Since 1983, Mercy Housing and Shelter Connecticut has been working to empower homeless persons to become independent, so they may live and work with dignity and respect.
Last year Mercy Housing and Shelter’s programs served more than 5,700 individuals providing housing, food, job training, access to medical services, and basic human needs.
In an article in the current issue of the newspaper of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford Connecticut, linked to this item, Patricia McKeon rsm, Executive Director of Mercy Housing and Shelter, says very clearly that 'homelessness can be history'. The article traces the history of Mercy Housing and Shelter with Sr Patricia concluding: ' '“They are strong people,” she said about those she serves. “I don’t know that I could live through being homeless with the strength and oftentimes with the grace that they do.”...'
