Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Union's top military nurses were nuns (Americas)
Editor: This week ((July 1-3) marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the fight that many historians point to as the turning point of the American Civil War.
Among the wide range of historical articles and features published to commemorate the Sesquicentennial this week is this one in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette which recounts something of the involvement of 12 religious orders, including the Sisters of Mercy of Pittsburgh, who sent sisters to battlefields, military hospitals and hospital ships.
Mary Denis Maher rsm book in 'To Bind Up the Wounds: Catholic Sister Nurses in the U.S. Civil War' recounts the work of nearly 600 sisters from 12 different Catholic orders who nursed wounded and sick Union and Confederate soldiers between 1860 and 1865.
