Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Mercies Join in Campaign to Urge Prioritising of Global Hunger (GB Union)

Editor: Sisters of Mercy were among the hundreds of members of religious orders, priests and laity who lobbied 50+ members of parliament and researchers last week (14 May) to push for action on global hunger as part of the Enough Food for Everyone IF campaign, in an event organised by CAFOD, the official Catholic aid agency for England and Wales.

CAFOD is a founding member of the coalition of more than 200 organisations -  a scale to equal Make Poverty History - that have joined together to campaign for action by the G8 on the issue of global hunger.

1 in 8 people - some 868 million - still go to bed hungry every night. Yet our planet provides enough food for everyone.

The lobby came ahead of June’s G8 summit which is held in the UK only once every eight years. The participants who had personal and/or congregational experience of living and working in developing countries 'took turns to question MPs and asked for action to be taken, not in an abstract way, but out of painful personal experience. For many of the participants had witnessed children die of malnutrition, tried to console grieving mothers, used their skills to save lives and bring hope in the face of immense suffering', writes Angela Moroney rsm in her report on the Sisters of Mercy of the Union of Great Britain website.

According to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), US$50.2bn per annum, on top of existing funding, would be the cost of creating a 'world free from hunger' by 2025, says Christian Aid UK.
