No. 511 | 24 April 2013

Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Mercy Teen Earns Scholarship Based on Desire to End Human Trafficking (Americas)

Editor: Regular readers of Mercy E-news would be aware that the past 3 issues we have featured the remarkable contributions to the Mercy world (and beyond) from 3 elders of the global Mercy community: M. Maurita Sengelaub rsm - Americas(No. 509 | 10 April 2013), Mary C Sullivan rsm - Americas ( No. 510 | 17 April 2013) and Pat Kenny rsm - ISMAPNG (No. 508 | 03 April 2013).

This week we highlight the efforts of a young Mercy woman, Brooke Burghardt, a senior at Mercy High School in Baltimore, Maryland. Brooke has been awarded the winner of the 2013 Girls Gone Great scholarship essay contest sponsored by WomanTalk Live, a radio program and online community founded by entrepreneur Ann Quasman. Hear Brooke on Ann's show (podcast)

What is inspiring about Brooke is that in her desire to put an end to human trafficking and provide educational opportunities for girls worldwide, she shares the aspirations and dedication of Mercy Sisters, Associates and co-workers world-wide, seen particularly in the efforts of Mercy Global Action as reported in past issues of Mercy e-news and in the MGA microsite on trafficking.

Brooke represents all the young women and men in Mercy schools and colleges who are animated by the spirit of Mercy to carry forward the work of Catherine and the long line of Mercy Sisters since. In this she is, in the words of Ann Quasman, "setting the stage for the next generation of leadership."

Messages to Brooke c/- Carol Wheeler rsm-  President Mercy High School Baltimore.
