Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

A Day with Mary Sullivan rsm (Sisters of Mercy in Australia and Papua New Guinea)
A good cup of tea greeted the three hundred Sisters, Associates, Colleagues, Relative ( Ross McAuley, Catherine's great, great, great, great, great nephew) and Friends of Mercy who gathered in eager anticipation on Saturday 13 April in North Sydney to hear Mary C Sullivan rsm. The week previously another sizable and animated group assembled at Aranmore Catholic College in Leederville, Perth for the same purpose.
Why such an eager turnout? The words of Veronica Lawson rsm who introduced Mary at the North Sydney gathering express well Mary’s great gift to those of us for whom Catherine is a significant figure and whose vision animates us. 'Mary has made her considerable scholarship available to the entire Mercy world and to all those interested in the particular refraction of God’s mercy that Catherine McAuley bequeathed to our world.’
The Congregations of Sisters of Mercy of Brisbane, North Sydney, Parramatta and the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and PNG, sponsored these two days of prayer, input, reflection, sharing and discussion, the third biennial Catherine McAuley Symposium. It was a fitting occasion for the Leaders of the 4 congregations to sign the documentation trademarking the Mercy cross in Australia and PNG.
Symposium events, organised in each of the Mercy congregations across the globe, are intended to help make the Cause for Canonisation and Catherine McAuley ‘known and loved’. The responses to the programme, some of which are linked to this article, testify that listeners were inspired and challenged by the depth of scholarship, personal conviction, humility and warmth of the presenter.
Taking as her themes ‘Getting Up Again and laying Down our Lives: the Enduring Work of Mercy’ (Session 1) and ‘Sharing Christ’s Merciful Yoke of Solidarity’ (Session 2) Mary put before us two indelible images – Catherine’s worn out shoes and her simple black shawl. These gave living witness to Catherine’s determination and tenacity of purpose. ‘Getting up again…laying down your life…taking up my yoke…’ were the invitation to stand with her today.
‘As Mercy people, we owe an incalculable debt to Mary Sullivan' concluded Veronica. 'To invoke an Easter metaphor, we expect that our hearts will burn within us as she reveals to us a little more of the Mercy story that we all inhabit.'
And they did.

OLMC Parramatta Raises Record Amount for Project Compassion (Parramatta Congregation)
The 2013 Project Compassion appeal at OLMC Parramatta has raised over $9000 for Caritas Australia, a record amount for the College.
Principal Kitty Guerin says the College community is thrilled with the result; “there is always very enthusiastic support for Project Compassion as it goes to the core of what we are about as a Mercy school. This year the College launched the appeal for the Parramatta Diocese on Shrove Tuesday, the beginning of the Catholic season of Lent. Since then, students have been busily fundraising with some Homeroom groups raising over $700.
Claire Thomas, Director of Mission at the College, says this great result is an example of Catholic Faith in action; “a combination of superior student leadership in the area of Mercy Action and genuine College wide commitment to living out Gospel values through social justice made this total possible.”
Read the Media Release here.
In keeping with their commitment to Social Justice, OLMC has hosted the 2013 Kid's View social justice conference which aims to help students explore the complex reality of poverty and encourage them to action. Read about that event here.

Extract from the Submission to the Prime Minister of Canada from Mercy Centre for Ecology and Justice, March 25, 2013.
'Joining with the voices of a growing number of people across the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and with deep concern for the future sustainability of the finite natural resources of our province I draw to your attention the concern of the people on the West Coast of Newfoundland and indeed of the world globally on the issue of hydraulic fracturing (fracking). As a member of the Committee on Cosmology and Eco Justice of Mercy Global Action, a worldwide group representing Sisters of Mercy in over forty countries with an NGO at the United Nations and as coordinator of the Mercy Centre for Ecology and Justice I am aware of the grave concerns being expressed regarding the potential hazards for the environment involved in the use of this procedure...'

Sisters: Catholic Nuns and the Making of America (New)
'When Wall Street Journal reporter Fialka set out to tell the story of America's Catholic nuns, he knew he faced a daunting challenge. Church histories contained little about the women he calls "America's first feminists," though they built 800 hospitals and more than 10,000 private schools. Since doing them justice would require volumes, Fialka decided to use one large order, the Sisters of Mercy, as a model, mentioning some of the other 400 communities where appropriate...'

OLMC Parramatta is a Catholic independent girls school whose vision, mission, policies and procedures are underpinned by the following Mercy values:
Mercy, Compassion, Justice, Dignity, Excellence, Hospitality, Stewardship and Service.
OLMC was founded by a group of insightful and dedicated Sisters of Mercy who arrived in Parramatta from Callan, Ireland, in 1888. They were determined to provide a wide range of opportunities for students which could lead to work outside the home or further education- radical possibilities for girls of the late 19th century.
