Mercy Named to Healthcare Hall of Fame (Americas)

On Sunday, March 10, 2013, at a ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel in Chicago, M. Maurita Sengelaub rsm (WMW) was inducted into the Modern Healthcare and the American College of Health Care Executive’s Hall of Fame, honoring individuals who dedicated their lives to advancing the health of people around the world. These persons exemplify the best in executive leadership and public service.

The first woman head of the Catholic Hospital Association, now Catholic Health Association (CHA), Sister Maurita was recognized for her 60 years of leadership in health care. Sister Maurita, Don Wegmiller who pushed the hospital industry to integrated systems, and Dr. Denton Cooley who made the first U.S. heart transplant, were each given their awards during the America College of Healthcare Executives 2013 Congress on Healthcare Leadership.

Sister Maurita joins Sister Roch Rocklage (who was inducted in 2007) as the second Sister of Mercy of the Americas to be so honoured. Instituted in 1988, the roll of honour of these awards now numbers eight women religious among the 95 inductees, including two saints – Mother Francesca Cabrini and Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton.

An outline of Sister Maurita's journey in healthcare is linked to this item.
