Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Feed the Hungry Dinner - a Story of Hope at Easter (ISMAPNG)

To feed the hungry is the lived tradition of Mercy. Catherine wrote: "[God] knows I would rather be cold and hungry than the poor in Kingston or elsewhere should be deprived of any consolation in our power to afford". (Letter to Teresa White November 1, 1838).

At Academy of Mary Immaculate Fitzroy, fundraising for worthy causes is a core part of the College's justice focus, with fundraising for Project Compassion, the Australian Catholic Church's Lenten Appeal, the major effort each year during the first school term.

This year, for something different, the College held a "Feed the Hungry" dinner. Significantly, this was the initiative of a senior student, Monica, who had been awarded funds to hold a community project. This idea was embraced enthusiastically by the senior executive of the justice group (12 students) who commenced their planning for the event in 2012 and who, on the day formed into teams of chefs- the "Apple Crumble Team", the "Maple Syrup Glazed Carrot Team"...It was an inclusive function with the menu catering for coeliacs, vegans, diabetics and lactose intolerant persons.

It was more than a meal. The evening commenced with Prayer and Welcome to Country, acknowledging Indigenous connection with land, then a powerpoint on the meaning of Project Compassion and of the justice activities in the life of the college. There was also a speaker from the young Mercy Justice Tree group.

Parents, students, staff  and friends of the college gave tremendous support to the “Feed the Hungry Dinner”, raising AUD$2,620 while raising their own awareness of the needs of others and of the ability we each have to come together to make a difference.
