Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Wellsprings 2012:
This week we make available the first of the series of videos from the "Watering the Roots at the Wellspring of Mercy" 2012 renewal programme, with presentations from Elizabeth Davis rsm, Congregational Leader of the Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland, given during the first week (July 1-6).
'Today, women religious who echo Catherine's charism in a new age marked by intense social change and growing fragility of earth are challenged,' says Elizabeth,' to be that mercy fire kindling.'
Two clips are presented for viewing and reflection in which Elizabeth raises and addresses those challenges. These clips, both from Day 5, should be viewed sequentially (Session 1, Session 2).

Celebrating Mercy Day at Baggot Street (MIA)
On this 185th anniversary since Catherine opened the House of Mercy on Baggot Street, eighty five Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Associates, partners in ministry and friends of Mercy celebrated Mercy Day in her original house on Baggot Street. The home countries of those participating in this celebration included Australia, England, Ireland, Kenya, United States and Wales.
The celebration included a liturgy presided over by Patrick Hume SJ (Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice) followed by food and conversation in the dining room. Helena O’Donoghue rsm (Congregation/South Central Province) provided the reflection on the Mercy Day readings.
The liturgy was enriched by music led by Eithne Doyle rsm (organist), Rosaleen Hogan rsm (singer), and Ailish O’Brien rsm (violinist), all from the South Central Province of the Congregation/Ireland.
A full report, including Helena's reflection, is linked to this item.

Camden Catholic High School celebrates 125 years (Americas)
CHERRY HILL — On the north wall of Camden Catholic High School the words Faith, Honor, and Loyalty are painted in big green letters.
Inside the walls of the oldest Catholic high school in South Jersey there are four members of the administration that have taken loyalty to an entirely different level.
Teachers John Phipps, Jim Crawford and Anthony D’Antonio, and guidance counselor Sister Philomena Gini have combined for nearly 190 years of service to the school.
And as the school celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, those close to the Fighting Irish say such longevity and dedication are key to the school’s ongoing success...

President Christopher Blake reflects on the value of Mercy 'pillars' (Americas)
...When the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Iowa with a desire to follow in the footsteps of Catherine McAuley and to serve "wherever human needs exist," they focused their energies on seeing to the needs of the sick and the poor and providing education to improve lives. In so doing, they created three pillars of this city: Mercy Hospital, the Catherine McAuley Center and what eventually became Mount Mercy University, now celebrating 85 years of educational service to this community. What they left behind, however, created a value that cannot be measured by institutions alone...

Seeds of Eco-spirituality & Sustainability Planted at Mercy Farm (Americas)
Editor: This article by Chloe Van Aken, an Associate of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, is the first in a series on places and programs where concerns for Earth, sustainability, ecology and eco-spirituality are fostered by sisters and associates. It has been reproduced from iViva Mercy with the kind permission of the Institute Communications Office.
" In 1994, the Benedictine Monks of Elmira, New York, gave their farm to the Sisters of Mercy in Vermont with the single stipulation that it be used for spiritual purposes. The farm, located in Benson, Vermont, is in close proximity to the majestic Adirondack and Green Mountains. For many years, retreats were held at Lumen Christi under the direction of the sisters operating the Institute for Spiritual Development. Then, in the fall of 2010, a new venture began when the Northeast Community opened Mercy Farm at Lumen Christi. Contemplation was no longer the only focus. The added value was to turn the 39-acre farm into an ecological model..."

Visit the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas website to view new logo (Americas)
September 24, 2012 – As Sisters of Mercy across the globe celebrate the founding of the first House of Mercy on September 24, the Sister of Mercy of the Americas are unveiling a new logo. At the center of this new logo is a cross modeled after Sisters of Mercy’s mark of membership, the Mercy cross. The “cross within a cross” design depicts how Sisters of Mercy founder Catherine McAuley was inspired by Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and her commitment to symbolically place herself on the cross in solidarity with those who suffer in our world. The joy and compassion of life as a Sister of Mercy is captured in the outer free-flowing cross...
