Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Australian Mercies Speak for the Rights of Trafficked People (Sisters of Mercy in Australia &PNG)

Meredith Evans rsm, Carole McDonald rsm, Therese Power rsm and Anne Tormey rsm are among the group of women religious from around Australia making their sixth annual pilgrimage this week to Canberra, the nation's capital, in a bid to influence policies affecting people trafficked into Australia.

The fifteen women, Catholic sisters and their colleagues, are all members of Australian Catholic Religious
Against Trafficking in Humans (ACRATH).
They are spending this week (August 19-24) in Canberra speaking
to 76 Members of Parliament and Ministerial staff, as well as Church leaders, in their continuing endeavours to ensure trafficked people access their human rights.

While acknowledging the current work of the Australian Government, particularly its willingness to collaborate with NGOs to develop social policy to address the issue of human trafficking, ACRATH has four talking points it will put to the Members of Parliament.

ACRATH'S Talking Points for Advocacy visit to Canberra are linked to this item.

Messages to: Carole McDonald rsm - Victorian Co-ordinator ACRATH

Editor: ACRATH is in the process of producing a web-based resource for middle and upper secondary (second level) students. Details of this resource will be advertised in E-News when the resource becomes available.
