Mercies Call Upon Politicians to Pass Dream Act (Americas)

...to stand in solidarity with immigrants...--Critical Concerns, 2005 Chapter Acts

The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas have been advocating for 10 years for the DREAM Act ( legislation that would create a pathway to citizenship for young, undocumented immigrants). Passing the DREAM Act is one step toward that reform that will benefit everyone.

The Department of Homeland Security’s announcement on June 15 to remove the threat of deportation for some young adults who came to the United States as children without documentation was welcomed by the Institute.

Pat McDermott rsm, president of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas said, “While this directive is not a replacement for legislation that would create a permanent solution for these young people, it is a step in the right direction.” Read the Statement here.

On Friday, June 22, hundreds of members of the South Central Community gathered in Assembly in North Carolina (June 21-24) took the opportunity to call their U.S. senators and representatives to urge them to support the DREAM Act.

The " Dial a DREAM" event was widely reported in the press and on television. The NewsChannel 36 video report is linked to this item (00:1:50).
