Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Lenten Reflections
Today, Ash Wednesday, we begin the season of Lent. It is a season associated with prayer, fasting and almsgiving, which is, in effect, ‘compassion in action’. The MIA Vision proclaims that ‘God’s gracious and compassionate Mercy is the wellspring, the source of never failing supply, for all those who cherish and seek to live out the gift of Mercy’ and that the vision itself ‘keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among people of the world most in need of God’s compassion and mercy’.
This year, the Mercy International Association’s Lenten Luncheon series will focus on Mercy Global Action’s two major themes. These themes - Opposing Human Trafficking and Cosmology and Eco Justice will be presented in a theological process. Participants will be invited to substitute their lunch with a complimentary bowl of soup and to make a contribution of their regular lunch money to any of the causes presented. Materials used in these presentations will be available online.
Here are some ideas that are related to our two themes which you might like to consider.

Global Action Lived Locally - Mercy Sisters support Veronica’s Voice
VERONICA'S VOICE is a grassroots organization in Kansas City, USA, founded in 2000 by Kristy Childs, a survivor of commercial sexual exploitation, trauma and drug addiction. Veronica’s Voice (VV) is named in remembrance of Veronica April Neverdusky, who was 21 years old in 1993 when she was found murdered. This local organisation assists women and girls, caught in commercial sexual exploitation and without voices, to escape from the sex trade to find healthier and happier lives.

Thanksgiving Celebration Shanklin (Institute of Our Lady of Mercy, Great Britain)
The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes 2012 was a day of mixed emotions for the Sisters of Shanklin community, together with parishioners, Sisters from the wider Institute family, and their friends and relations.
It was a day to celebrate the faithful, loving witness of 114 years of Mercy service to people of all faiths or none, on the Isle of Wight. The joy was tinged with tangible sadness as the Sisters said “goodbye” to their many friends and colleagues, as they prepare to move to their new community in Worthing at the end of the month.

Sister Celebrates 85 years of Religious Profession (Australia)
This week, Sister Mary Mildred O’Brien, who recently celebrated her 104th birthday, gathered with Sisters and friends at a Mass of Thanksgiving to mark her 85th anniversary of Religious Profession. On the occasion of her first Profession, Mildred chose the Gospel text Trade ‘til I come as her motto. Among those offering tributes were representatives of her past pupils, who commented on her wise teaching methods, her kindness and her great capacity as a listener. Others spoke of her keen interest in each person, her remarkable memory and her quick wit and humour.
In response, Sister Mildred expressed her thanks to all who were present, adding that her only regret was that she was born ‘too early’, as she finds she is too old now to travel to visit all the new communities that are part of the newly formed Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea!

Success for Mercy Sisters and Panama Campaign
For centuries the Ngöbe people have lived by the rivers in the remote hills of western Panama, but now the government of Panama sees profit in those rivers, and they have given concessions to subsidiaries of the American company AES to build a series of large hydroelectric dams. The dams would flood the Ngöbe's traditional territory, destroy their homes and fields, and break apart communities and families. To clear the way for the dams, the AES subsidiary and the Panamanian government are pressuring the Ngobe to sign away their rights on documents they can't read, and are using unscrupulous techniques to drive them out.
A campaign, which the Sisters of Mercy urged us to join, has been successful in obtaining some concessions for the Ngobe people and in establishing dialogue regarding the construction of hydroelectric dams and mining in indigenous territories.
