Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Feature

Engaging the Rio + 20 process and looking forward to the Earth Summit 2012

A meeting held in Mercy International Centre, Baggot Street, Dublin in December 2011 was a joint initiative of MIA Global Action and the Irish Mercy Congregation and was a follow up from a previous meeting in December. One participant, reflecting on this gathering as a ‘truly life giving experience’ noted that Sisters of Mercy and all associated with them can be actively involved in shaping the agenda for this ‘moment of opportunity’ for the whole earth community. The meeting certainly enabled participants to feel involved in the preparation for Rio + 20.

The vision and guiding principles and themes of Mercy Global Action (Cosmology/Eco Justice and Opposing Trafficking) were outlined. Participants heard how Mercy Global Action links Mercy sisters, associates and partners in ministry across the world and how it supports them to engage in common campaigning and advocacy. They also heard reports from the preparatory meeting for Rio + 20 which took place in Geneva and on the Durban Climate Change meeting.
