Global Action Lived Locally: A Case Study from Australia
Mercy Sisters in Australia are very active in ACRATH, the Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans.
A report of a visit ACRATH made to over 100 Members of Australia's Parliament and their advisers to voice their concerns for people who are trafficked is linked to this item.
Sisters of Mercy, Sr Carole McDonald, Sr Therese Power and Sr Anne Tormey were part of this advocacy visit. It is an example of how Mercy Sisters work with other organisations to advocate at national level.

Pilgrimage of Young Mercy Leaders
It has been two months since 142 Young Mercy Leaders gathered in Dublin coming from Mercy-affiliated high schools and universities in Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Britain, Ireland, and the United States.
While the energy of the group gathered was tremendous, there is evidence that it is not dying out as students returned to their home communities. Mercy International Association has heard from many of the delegations about ways in which the students are sharing this Mercy story with others in their schools and universities.

The Mercy International Centre Christmas Card design is taken from the hand illuminated Rule and Constitution circa 1842 by M. Clare Augustine Moore 1808-1880.
The cards can be purchased from the MIC Gift Shop in person or online for 50 cents each.
While the fundraising aspect is important, the design of these cards also helps raise awareness of Mercy International Centre and the wonderful heritage items held here.

'Getting up again' to answer Mercy's Call (Aotearoa New Zealand)
Editor: In issues 430 and 431 of Mercy E-News were published articles 'A Day to Celebrate Mercy' and 'Celebrating Mercy with Mary C Sullivan rsm' written about a series of reflective talks given by Mary C Sullivan rsm.
Denis Horton in the latest edition of Imaging Mercy Today presents his considered reflection on the reports of that day, drawing on the video clip (13 minutes) that is part of those reports.
Denis concludes: " Mary C Sullivan ended her reflection by quoting from a letter of Catherine’s, written to Frances Warde at Carlow in1840, when she confessed to being so tired that “the name of another foundation would make me sick – but they say I would get up again.” Getting up is the persistent call of the Gospel, Mary C Sullivan concluded. Mercy people do not retire from their commitment to serve the poor. Each day is a new beginning, another chance for us to share in Jesus’ mission of mercy. "

In a letter sent to President Obama in response to his scheduled meeting with Honduran President Porfirio Lobo at the White House on October 5, 2011, Sisters of Mercy urged him to use this encounter with President Lobo to deliver an unequivocal message on the need for human rights improvements and an end to the impunity still present in Honduras.

Living Mercy in life and into the future (Australia / Brisbane)

Deirdre, who has just finished as the Executive Director of Mercy Global Concern - UN Desk of the Sisters of Mercy spoke about the influence of Catherine McAuley on Global Issues and took the participants on a world tour of Mercy Ministries around the world.
Peta explored what it means to be mercy into the future in the light of contemporary reasearch into Catholic identity.
In an article posted on the Institute of Sisters of Mercy Australia website, Sandra Lupi rsm, Congregation leader, reflects on this year of "Living Mercy" and how that theme "has given us the opportunity to rejoice and celebrate the vision, courage and fidelity of the past; to acknowledge our past and present limitation in living mercy in our actions and our structures and to honour the passion for mercy that sustains and motivates us in the present..."

St Mary's Convent, Handsworth, Birmingham - celebrating 170 years of living Mercy (Gt Britain Union)
In true Mercy style, we gathered to celebrate these 170 years of Ministry through so many changes in Religious Life, in the Church and in the city of Birmingham. We celebrated for three days...
I think Catherine would have been surprised and greatly pleased by the cultural diversity represented at the celebrations and she would have recognised how the Sisters have taken to heart her own words: “Every place has its own particular ideas and feelings which must be yielded to when possible”.
Just as Catherine welcomed the stranger and acknowledged those who were different, so the Sisters over the years have done the same—welcoming and working alongside those of other faiths, races and cultures who have moved to the area seeking a better life, often a life free from persecution. In a special way, the Sisters link with the leaders of these varied ethnic and religious communities in the continuing search for harmony and peaceful co-existence...

The Correspondence of Mother Vincent Whitty
This hard cover, attractively produced book, edited by Brisbane Sisters Anne Hetherington and Pauline Smoothy, contains over 340 letters written to, by or about Mother Vincent (Ellen) Whitty. They cover a period of fifty-two years, from her entry into the Congregation in Dublin in 1839 to her death in Brisbane in 1892. They are an important resource, not only for the Brisbane Congregation, but for the whole Mercy world, as many of the letters pertain to Mother Vincent’s time as Rev Mother in Baggot Street (1849-1855).
Of particular significance is the exchange of letters between the young Sr M Vincent and M M Cecilia Marmion during the final days of Catherine McAuley’s life, and M Vincent’s correspondence relating to the sending of Sisters to the Crimean War.
