A Day to Celebrate Mercy (GB Union)
Editor: In last week's Mercy E-News a report from the Sisters of Mercy Great Britain Institute alerted readers to the Reflection Day with Mary Sullivan rsm (Americas) in St. Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham, organized by the Canonization Group.
This week Philomena Bowers rsm outlines further for us some of the rich material that Mary Sullivan rsm broke open in her talk.
Sr Philomena writes: ...We were so pleased to welcome Mary who is completing her biography of Catherine. Mary reminded us that Catherine’s vision and ministry were under-pinned by her faith, her theological understandings. It was encouraging to be reminded that Catherine arrived at her theological understanding the same way we do — in Scripture, by reading, by conversations...

Mercy Leadership Calls For Reflection and Action on 10th Anniversary of September 11th
This week the attention of the world has been drawn to the 10th Anniversary of September 11th.
The leadership of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas posted an invitation online on the Institute website inviting 'each one of us in the Mercy family to use this 10th anniversary of September 11th to pray and reflect on our complicity in violent responses to crises in our world and how we might draw on our commitment to nonviolence to live differently--both with our neighbors locally and with all peoples of our precious world. We trust with God’s strength and wisdom that we will find a way…together...'
The invitation is drawn to readers' attention and the additional resources made available for reflection on finding new ways of living as members of the global community remain available for readers to access.

A Land of Contrasts (The Congregation)
I have just returned with my niece from a month in South Africa, where Christine was volunteering as a speech therapist, and as I reflect on the experience, I wonder which aspect I should highlight.
Should I talk about the beauty of the landscape... Should I talk about the wonder of seeing animals running free in their own environment...the warm Mercy hospitality...the kindness and thoughtfulness of so many other South Africans...
South Africa is, without doubt, a land of contrasts...

Newly discovered planets include super-Earth
Astronomers have discovered more than 50 new planets orbiting stars beyond the sun, including a ''super-Earth'' with the potential to support life.
The planet is 3.6 times larger than Earth and orbits its star in under 60 days, a distance that puts it within the star's habitable zone - where liquid water can exist on the surface under the right conditions.
