Celebrating a precious legacy (Aotearoa New Zealand)
It’s a century and a half since the first Sisters of Mercy arrived in Wellington on June 14, 1861. The trio made the week-long trip by steamer from Auckland in response to a request from Bishop Philippe Viard to save a mission on the verge of collapse.
Leading the group was Englishwoman Mother Bernard Dickson, who had served with a group of Irish Mercy sisters, nursing wounded soldiers in the Crimean War before being invalided home after suffering frostbite and two attacks of typhoid.

The Saville Apology - one year later (The Congregation)
'As my home city prepares to remember the historic apology from the British Government one year ago this month, my brother, Don Mullan, author of "Eyewitness Bloody Sunday" (the key research which lead to
the new inquiry) and producer of the documentary film "Bloody Sunday" speaking at a commencement at De Paul University Chicago on Friday June 10th, 2011 where he received an honourary degree for his human rights work, said that while the apology was significant, it did not address many other issues especially the cover-up which actually lead to Bloody Sunday in January 1972. "Apologies are one thing but understanding the mindsets behind governments which deliberately murder innocent victims, as we see unfolding week after week in the current Middle East crisis, are unsettling."
Three Derry Mercy Sisters were joined year after year by other Mercy women from the North on the commemoration march each year. The Bloody Sunday families say that it was this solidarity which gave them the courage to continue their lonely campaign for over 40 years.'

Libraries have a bright future in our brave new world
We forget sometimes, as we fret about the future of the book, that the future is about more than books. It's about more than authors, or bookshops. It's about more than Amazon, or Google, or the new Nook versus the slightly older Kindle. The future is also about the past. About memories and how they can shape what is still to come...
