Global Action Lived Locally: A Case Study from the United States of America
The Sisters of Mercy, West Midwest Community, are the primary funders of the Justice Project in Kansas City, a project which works with women who have been trafficked within the United States...
The term human trafficking usually conjures up images of women brought to the United States from impoverished nations and forced into prostitution or domestic servitude.
Kris Wade, founder of The Justice Project expands that definition to anyone caught up in sexual exploitation, whether from overseas or from around the corner from where they live. "Transportation has nothing to do with it," she says. "It's a person being used as a commodity, trading sex for a place to stay, a ride or money."

150 Years of Mercy Presence in Longford Town (The Congregation)
' ....Sr Elizabeth Manning, Provincial of the Sisters of Mercy, Western Province opened her address with thanks to all who had made this day possible. She said, “There have been a lot of references to the work of the sisters in Longford over the past 150 years and, while you say thanks to us by your presence here, we too also say thanks to you. Without your faith in us, we could not have been here and in all the other places we have been for 150 years.”
She went on to say that people who desired better health and education and a better life for their children, the people who looked for social services, for people in rural communities - these were the people who enabled the sisters to do the work that they have done for the last 150 years.
Sr Elizabeth concluded her address by saying, “There is also sadness in the fact that we are more diminished than we used to be. There is rejoicing, too, that the works and the seeds that were sown 150 years ago have grown and have borne fruit, and now somebody else is tending to those works of mercy.” The cover of the booklet says, “His Mercy reaches from age to age.” As we try to find meaning in our diminishment as Sisters of Mercy, we rejoice in the fact that mercy was around before Catherine McAuley and it will be around when there may not be Sisters of Mercy in Longford...'

Three new Associates (Newfoundland)
In a spirit of Easter joy, the Conception Bay Associates and their facilitators – Sisters Ruth Beresford, Madeline Byrne and Josette Hutchings gathered on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at Conception Harbour Renewal Centre to welcome three new members to their group.
Sister Elizabeth Davis, Congregation Leader and Sister Maureen O’Keefe, Associate Coordinator, were pleased to be present for the event. Sister Elizabeth received the commitment of Marina Brazil, Mary Moriarity and Theresa O’Neill and presented them with their Associate pins, certificates and candles. In her usual manner, Sister Elizabeth spoke to the Associates on the mutual enrichment of Mercy Charism that continues to grow through the collaboration of Mercy Sisters and Associates. She noted that in the beginning, Catherine McAuley and her first group of young women were really Associates of Mercy and only later evolved into the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy. In a sense, we have come full circle – a wider, richer circle...

Hesed Kenya (The Congregation)
...The term Hesed means Mercy. It refers to the Sisters of Mercy who are under sixty years of age. The idea of “under sixty” was conceived at a conference held in Ireland in 2009. In attendance was Sr. Maria Ngui – a Kenyan Sister, who in turn brought and initiated the idea of “under sixty” in Kenya.
The aim of “Hesed Kenya” goes beyond that of unifying and supporting one another. It reaches out to the wider community where there is a need. As the name Hesed suggested, the members are committed to the works of mercy. They identify needy cases in the society and offer the necessary help where possible. So far more than four particular needs have been identified and the necessary help has been given...
