Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Launch of the Policy for Ecological Responsibility & VITA Presentation on Sisters of Mercy / Vita Partnership (The Congregation)
In the February 9th edition of Mercy E-News (Edition 399), the article 'Global Action Lived Locally: A Case Study from Ethiopia' reported on an example of the collaborative approach being pursued by the Sisters of Mercy in Ireland - a joint programme of the Sisters of Mercy in the Western Province with an Irish organization, Vita, launched in 2009. These two groups have a shared goal: To build sustainable livelihoods for people, especially women, living in Cencha Woreda, Southern Ethiopia”. Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world. 70 per cent of people live off less than $2 a day. It is now the 5th most hungry country in the world - and with 85 million people this is a disaster and a tragedy.
On Friday, April 18th, a presentation on the Mercy/Vita partnership led by the VITA team - John Weakliam, Vita Chief Executive and Deirdre Ruane, Vita Development - updated the province on the happenings of 2010/11 informing those present that the Mercy/Vita partnership is a real blessing because of the shared values and work ethic. One of the core values of Vita is empowerment and that is what Mercy calls enablement, which is to give people the capacity to live their own life whether it is spiritual or material.

Mercy representative shares success story with US Senate Health Committee (Americas)
Mercy President and CEO Timothy Charles testified on Thursday, May 5, before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa has been recognized as one of the nation's leading providers of high quality and cost effective healthcare. Mr. Charles was invited to speak as part of the Senate hearing on "Improving Health Quality and Patient Safety"
In his testimony Mr Charles said:
" Mercy was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1900 and for the past century has been devoted to a healthcare ministry of caring for the sick and improving the health of the communities we serve. The themes that thread their way through this long and unbroken history are to: stand upon the ground of compassionate service established by the Sisters; provide the state of the art and science of medicine made possible by extremely talented providers, and the generosity of community members that see to it the organization is equipped with the most advanced facilities and technology; and finally, to place the needs of our patients and the common good at the center of all undertakings..."

Imaging Mercy Today May 2011 (Aotearoa New Zealand)
This issue reflects on the pilgrimage to Baggot Street by two key partners in Mercy mission.
"The pilgrimages mark a notable reversal of the trend begun even before Catherine's death, when members of her newly founded Congregation moved from Ireland to establish new foundations in different parts of the world. Today, the movement now sees a return to Ireland, with word of how Mercy ministries are working to make a difference to lives today."
