Leyte floods displaced over 60,000 people (Philippines)

While we maybe overshadowed by the quake and tsunami in Japan, a flood hit Leyte, Philippines last March 17, 2011.

A heavy downpour affected over 60 thousand people. Eight persons were identified as casualties in the region, including the family of seven that was buried alive in Bargy, Cabalawan due to a landslide incident.

A state of calamity was declared both by the provincial government of Leyte and by the city government of Tacloban. Classes in all levels were cancelled. The government and church people took part in the rescue and relief efforts.

Many organizations volunteered and that gave the victims strength and hope that they were supported. The Religious Sisters of Mercy in Tacloban also showed support to the families by welcoming evacuees both to the Mother of Mercy Hospital and Holy infant College. Indeed, the disaster brought out the best in people and helped bind a community.
