Global Action Lived Locally: A Case Study from England
The Sisters of Mercy of the Union of Great Britain has sisters working in England, Wales and Scotland. There are also members of this community who live and work in South Africa, Lebanon and Romania.
In the words of their General Chapter 2005 Sisters of Mercy of the Union restated their commitment: ‘...as a Congregation to be ‘mercy to all’ with preferential option for the most vulnerable in society'.
An example of the Sisters of Mercy of the Union living this commitment is seen in the ministry of the Providence Row Homeless Centre in East London.

International ‘good cup of tea’ day
To commemorate the 170th anniversary of the death of Catherine McAuley, on 11/11/11 Mercy International Association is inviting you to organise a ‘sponsored cup of tea’ in your community, workplace or parish. It could be something like a ‘coffee morning’ where those you invite would have a cup of tea and give a donation towards MIA.
Please put this date in your diary and think about how you might go about it. We would love to hear about any creative ideas you have to make the occasion interesting and enjoyable for those who come.

Building hope in Haiti (The Congregation)
On April 2nd Srs. Bernadette Costello, Frances Kennedy, Ailish O’Brien, Kathy Higgins, Ann O’Shaughnessy and Mary Walshe will travel to Haiti along with 300 other volunteers to participate in Haven's Build it Week April 2011.
The sisters had originally signed up to travel to Haiti in October 2010 but on the day before they travelled, the cholera outbreak happened in Haiti and Haven had to cancel the October Build it Week. It has been a long wait and the Haitian people have endured much suffering in the meantime. However the time has now come.

Commissioning of Mercy Associates in Sierra Leone (Great Britain institute)
Maricourt Catholic High School in Maghull, Liverpool has established a relationship with St Raphael's Catholic Secondary school in Sierra Leone. This project is part of the Crosby Partnership and is funded by grants from the British Council.
A small but enthusiastic group of Youth Mercy Associates was established at St Raphael's in 2010 led by teacher, Mr. Raphael Vandi. These associates have been busy visiting vulnerable members of the community and meeting regularly to pray for them. Feeling ready to make their commitment to the movement, they waited for the visitors from Maricourt to be present. On the second day of the visit these students were commissioned at a service in the Parish church by Fr Jusu. They are proud to be pioneering this work of mercy and compassion in their country.
An illustrated diary of the visit can be viewed here.

An outstanding resource to use individually or with a group to consider the issues surrounding water scarcity and water use.
Feedback on the resource:
Thank you again for sending your water booklet. It's full of excellent information that I can use for my presentation at St Xavier University
It is of course always impressive when any group gets out in front of an issue in this way. As water becomes more scarce and demand increases there will be an ineluctable move (it is already underway) to commoditize it. Especially gratifying in the pamphlet is the repeated focus on this aspect of the problem since there are any number of commentaries that prefer to talk only about pollution and other threats but fear to address the question of corporate control of the essential 'beverage'...

The future of smartphones
The mobile phone is fast becoming the up-close-and-personal marketing medium. The power of knowing what you want and where to find you is indisputable.
The ability to combine a person's location at any given time with which websites or mobile applications they have visited on their smartphone's browser is opening a new world of possibilities for marketers
