Sculpture celebrates work of the Sisters of Mercy (The Congregation)
The sculpture commissioned to celebrate the work of the Sisters of Mercy since their coming to Ennis in 1854 was unveiled last week. The piece, created from polished white marble, depicts two of the Corporal Works of Mercy. “Feed the Hungry” is seen in the girl’s bowl being filled from a jug and the infant wrapped in a blanket depicts, “Clothe the Naked”. It is the work of local Irish sculptor Barry Wrafter.
The sculpture is situated in an archway in a lane near the town’s friary and is part of a series of street furniture, which has been developed in recent years as part of the Ennis Sculpture Initiative.
Speaking of the signnificance of the sculpture the Chairman of the Ennis Tidy Towns Committee, Noel Crowley, said: “The Sisters came to Ennis in 1854 to work with the poor here and I believe that sentiment is very appropriate at the moment -we badly need inspiration right now".

Global Action Lived Locally: A Case Study from southern Sudan
The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, in their direction statement, "are impelled to commit our lives and resources to act in solidarity with:
the economically poor of the world, especially women and children;
women seeking fullness of life and equality in church and society;
one another as we embrace our multicultural and international reality..."
One example of Sisters of Mercy of the Americas living this commitment is seen in the ministry of Mercy Beyond Borders.
