History at the hospital, Restored windows from Mercy's old chapel on display (Americas)
Patron saints of the sick and suffering, depicted in a collection of restored stained-glass windows, will look over the Lundy Pavilion at Mercy Medical Center for the next year.
The 'A Light Within' exhibit that opened last week features 16 restored stained-glass windows from the hospital's old chapel, which was torn down after the 2008 flood.
The windows have been in storage since the early 1970s, when the completion of Mercy's new patient tower made the chapel built in 1948 less accessible. After the new chapel was built, the windows -- commissioned pieces of artwork from Daprato Rigali Studios in Chicago -- were no longer needed but were kept intact. 'Religious communities are very astute in keeping history,' said Sister Marilyn Ward, Mercy archivist and director of volunteer services.

A woman of words reaches out to others (Americas)
Sharon Green, reading coordinator at Niagara University’s Office of Academic Support, won the Catherine McAuley Distinguished Alumna Award from the Mount Mercy Academy Alumni Association earlier this month and was feted at a gala dinner. Green won her award, named for the Sisters of Mercy founder, for her commitment and dedication...
Catherine McAuley used her fortune to help the poor. And McAuley Awardwinner Green is doing her part, too. A few years ago, after meeting a native of eastern Uganda and learning about poverty there, Green co-founded Global African Village to help the Bagishu people of eastern Uganda...

The primary goal of Global African Village is to supplement the efforts of the Bagishu people of eastern Uganda by improving the simple water system (wells), the First Aid posts, and the day care facilities that may already exist, to assist vulnerable children and the elderly.
