Works of Mercy Expand in West-Pokot, Kenya
...In this building we intend teaching Computer Studies, Food and Beverages and Garment Making up to the Kenya National Examinations Council level. Another subject we are preparing to teach is hairdressing. This building is an extension to one set up by Sr. Peter Hegarty, originally from the Diocese of Cloyne, in the year 2000. How I remembered her on the day and wished she could have been well enough to be with us to see how the seed she had planted had taken root and continues to expand with God’s help. Her wish was that local Pokot women would develop skills in Cookery, Dressmaking and Machine Knitting. We followed her wishes and in addition taught literacy and many of these women who were illiterate can now read well. We also did an outreach programme, taking pots and pans to remote areas to teach cookery to women. The idea Sr. Peter had was very close to the heart of Catherine Mc Auley and we still try to follow in her footsteps in educating women, young and old.

Mercy Leadership urges Congress to support DREAM Act (Americas)
Editor: The following message to Congress has been posted on the Institute of Sisters of America website:
Dear Members of Congress:
The Leadership Team of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas strongly supports the DREAM Act of 2009 (S. 729/H.R. 1751)...
The DREAM Act will provide a path to legal status for persons brought to the U.S. as children...
We believe our country will see great benefit from opening opportunities for young immigrants through the DREAM Act. ..

A Birthday Party for Catherine McAuley
Wednesday 29 September marked the 232nd year since the birth of Catherine McAuley. Thirty eight students and chaperones from All Hallows’ School in Brisbane Australia celebrated Catherine’s birthday at Mercy International Centre. In prayer and ritual, they reflected on the Mercy of God and prayed for the gifts of peace, compassion, hope, courage, gentleness, and insight as each of them walks the path of mercy.
