Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

The Priests and Mercy Global Concern
In December 2008 a trio of singing priests from Northern Ireland scooped the Guinness World Record for ‘Fastest-selling UK debut for a classical act’. Their album turned Platinum in Ireland, UK, Sweden, Norway as well as going Gold in New Zealand, Canada and Spain. When Deirdre Mullan, Director of Mercy Global Concern read this, she went into action. In January 2009, she contacted Fr. Eugene O Hagan, one of the three (the other two priests are: Fr. Martin O’ Hagan a brother of Fr. Eugene, and Fr. David Delargy) and asked if they might like to build a school in Cambodia in memory of their mother Joan, who attended the same high school as she did! In November 2009, she got the YES and she contacted Sr. Denise Coughlan, a Mercy Sister from Brisbane, Australia who heads Jesuit Relief Services Cambodia.
To make a long story short – the school building is nearing completion and this school marks yet another school built through the efforts and connections of MGC in realizing Millennium Development Goal 2, in that country.

Editor: In September this year, world leaders will gather in New York to renew a commitment they made in 2000 to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and halve world poverty by 2015. With only five years to go, can we still meet that deadline? Cathy Solano rsm, Australia's Mercy Works Inc.’s Community Education Officer, believes a crucial factor in realising all the MDGs is to realise MDG3 – to promote gender equality and empower women. Women as the Image of God
This week we present the final paper of the Mercy International Research Conference- Women as the Image of God: ‘Fire Cast on the Earth – Kindling’: Being Mercy in the Twenty-first Century by Patricia Fox, rsm. She addresses a question posed in an earlier paper: ‘ What distinctive contribution can we make (to certain social and global trends) precisely as Sisters of Mercy?’.
Pat says that ‘given the capacities for communication and travel that have existed now for decades it could be considered surprising that as a world- wide community of religious women, we have not responded to such a question with practical intent and in a sustained manner before.’ However, she rejoices that largely facilitated by the agency of Mercy International Association, we are finding ways to look at the big picture of our world and our times together,.
Drawing from the insights of the previous papers, Pat suggests that ‘Sisters of Mercy have the capacity to articulate and draw from a rich and deep spirituality of Mercy that is born out of a mature theology of God, of the profound importance of knowing women are created in the image of God and from the accumulated shared wisdom that service of the poor unleashes.’

The future of Religious life (Repeated)
Breege O’Neill rsm, who was the keynote speaker for the first day of the recent MIA Leadership Teams Conference, spoke on the future of Religious Life in the context of the MIA Vision and the Conference Theme - Mercy is the wellspring- the source of never failing supply.
Breege led the participants in reflection on the future of Religious Life through the lens of four questions:
What is the journey that shapes this present moment?
What kind of story will gift the future?
Where is the call in Religious life/Mercy life today?
What is the power that opens the way into the future?
