Reflection on our Global Connection (MGC)
More and more the globally interconnected, ecologically sensitive issues at the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) are being interpreted in a fundamentally ethical framework.
The thematic cluster for the eighteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development: Mining, Waste Management, Transport, Chemicals, and Sustainable Consumption and Production is tragically appropriate to recent global ecological catastrophes. With the BP oil spill continuing its assault in the Gulf of Mexico, the recent mining tragedies in the US, China and Russia, and the earthquakes in Haiti and Argentina several side events, as well as the plenary sessions featured especially emotional and morally challenging topics.

Philippine Sisters express thanks for prayers around elections
In early May, the Sisters of Mercy requested prayers for peace and safety for all Filipino people as the Philippine National Election took place on May 10.
Sister Letty de los Santos, a Sister of Mercy in the Philippines, responded with her thanks for all of the prayers. 'Your prayers gave strength and courage to stand with our conscience,” she said. “We were rained with tremendous prayers from you, our Mercy sisters, and people from different denominations all over the world.'

Where Sisters of Mercy Minister: Panama (15)
Sisters of Mercy have been ministering in Panama for over 50 years as twelve sisters from Brooklyn, New York, responded to the invitation of the Vincentian Fathers to join them in their ministry. Each of the original twelve sisters committed to living and ministering in Panama for a period of five years. Today, seven Sisters of Mercy live and minister in Panama. One is a sister who arrived from Brooklyn, New York, in 1964, and the other six are originally from Panama.
