Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Lessons from the New Ecclesial Movements

In this week’s paper ‘Lessons from the New Ecclesial Movements', Doris Gottemoeller rsm poses the question : How is our (Sisters of Mercy) modality distinct from that of the new ecclesial movements which originated in the twentieth century?

Having profiled three of those new movements, Doris offers observations and reflections on them and building on this, she outlines some challenges for the Church today and particularly for religious congregations such as the Sisters of Mercy. She concludes by stating that ‘ Our goal should not be to adopt their (new ecclesial movements) characteristics, but to embrace more decisively what makes us unique and distinctive, while learning from their genuine gifts. The same Spirit animates both religious and lay movements. The Church is richer for their diversity.

Reminder: Together we can help make a difference

Last week's Mercy E-News recounted the story of how 9 members of The Congregation (Ireland) are participating in Build It week in Haiti. The sisters are being supported in this venture by The Congregation but need to raise €4,500 each in funding. Details of where to send a donation or how to lodge it in the fundraising Bank Account can be found here.

The Congregation's commitment to alleviating global poverty is a focus reflected also in the MIA Vision Statement.
